Astros rookie Corey Julks delivers hit in first big league at-bat in front of hometown crowd

Houston Astros designated hitter Corey Julks gets his first Major League hit with a single against Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lance Lynn during the second inning of a MLB baseball game at Minute Maid Park on Friday, March 31, 2023 in Houston. After Corey Julks ripped an 0-2 Lance Lynn curveball into left field for a hit in his first big league at bat, he rounded first, pounded fists with first-base coach Omar Lopez and then appeared to signal to the crowd.

Playing just about 23 miles from the Clear Brook High School baseball field where he turned himself into a player and just a few miles from the University of Houston campus where he matured into an eventual draft pick, it would make sense that the rookie outfielder was showing love to friends and family, but after the"I really didn't know what to do," the 27-year-old said.

Julks said he only set aside about 10 tickets for friends and family, but knew a lot more than that came out to support him and was relieved to give them a hit right away. "To be able to get the first one out of the way on the first AB, that’s how I wanted to draw it up for sure," said Julks, who finished 1-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

After the Astros drafted him in the eighth round in 2017, Julks spent six years in the minors but forced his way onto the big league roster after slashing .270/.351/.503 with 31 home runs and 89 RBIs last season at Class AAA Sugar Land and then posting an .868 OPS with 12 RBIs in 40 at-bats in spring training.
