The U.S. House has passed an anti-lynching bill after repeated failed attempts over 120 years. The bill makes lynching a hate crime and is named after Emmett Till.
Since 1900, Congress has repeatedly failed to pass a bill making lynching a federal crime. Now the legislation could be on its way to the Oval Office.
“When it really mattered, and when it really would have had the impact of protecting the lives of black people in this country, there was widespread unwillingness” to pass a bill like this, said Tameka Bradley Hobbs, an associate professor of history at Florida Memorial University and the author of
“There’s much more that could be done in terms of our curriculum to make sure that folks understood the full scope of anti-black violence in American history,” Dr. Hobbs said. “I think if they understood that, perhaps they would understand the Black Lives Matter movement as an extension of centuries, really, of advocacy on the part of African-Americans.”
, a nonprofit legal advocacy group, have documented more than 4,000 lynchings in the United States between 1877 and 1950, mostly — though not exclusively — in the South. The extrajudicial killings were instruments of terror, often conducted as public spectacles in full view of, or with cooperation from, law enforcement.

So a bill to make something illegal that was already illegal passed... This bill serves only the purpose of misleading you into thinking lynchings actually happen Yet another virtual signaling law to be abused. FLHAmerica Excellent news. This has been going on for a century. It’s UNBELIEVABLE that it took 120 yrs! to finally rule lynching is a Federal Crime! You’ve killed a human being!!! Speechless! 😢😢😢
This will put a stop to the mass lynchings that occur all over the country daily. Glad the house is working on things to make our society better. Now if they can just pass that law requiring people to not refer to their 4 legged companions as pets. My God. This is what they do with their time? Lynching? Who is in danger of being lynched?
Oh, thank goodness. I thought they'd never outlaw lynching. Now its time to go after the rope manufacturers! We live in a Serious Country. You are not in the 50's anymore. Get a new issue. it took 120 years for the US to say that lynching black people was bad god how depressing sistadbarnes 🤦🏾♂️smh I’m giving all the glory to the individual who STARTED the Anti-Lynching Bill. Her name is IDA B. WELLS SayHerName
Emmett Till bill making lynching a federal crime passes HouseJUST IN: The House of Representatives overwhelmingly passes the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, voting 410-4. The bill makes lynching a hate crime under federal law, the first time in U.S. history. Who in the hell were the 4 that voted against it!? And why? So. About those born babies...... How is this, just now, becoming a law?
Wow, so hard to believe that now after 120 year lynching if finally illegal Let's see how many decades or maybe centuries India takes to pass such Bill! Rep. Justin Amash, Rep Thomas Massie, Rep Ted Yoho, and Rep Louie Gohmert are tripping 🤦🏽♂️ he was going to end up raping white women anyway, I don't see why his lynching was a problem 🤣
Yeah, so I can't believe it's 2020, and this just happened. This is an important step but young Emmett Till, a teenager, was abducted and shot, not lynched. Go to Money, Mississippi. The murderers were ultimate acquitted, yet everyone knew they were guilty. RIP Emmett Till. Yet when it comes to voting on the process of a fair trial - Dems wouldn’t allow an opposing witness 17-0. Then when hearsay was ALL the evidence given, LYNCHING DONALD TRUMP AS PRESIDENT WAS ALL THE DEMS COULD VOTE FOR!!! Dems right now are a NON-STOP LYNCH MOB AGAINST POTUS!!!
Welcome to the 20th C (not a typo) Wouldn’t the act of murder supersede the issue of a hate crime anyway?
House paves the way for historic anti-lynching bill to head to president’s deskThe House of Representatives passed a bill Wednesday making lynching a federal crime — paving the way for it to head to the president’s desk after more than 100 years of hundreds of failed attempts. Trump said “we can’t hang black people no more? What about my MAGA agenda? Didn't know that was an execution method used in any state. Why is it brought to everyone attention? Did the Senate pass the bill?
You mean to tell me “we” were walking around Lynchable. FOH 🙄 You've got to be one sorry excuse for a human being to vote against LYNCHING FFS! Amash (I-MI) Gohmert (R-TX) Massie (R-KY) Yoho (R-FL) Vote these monsters out. Sadly it will sit on senatemajldr McConnell’s desk along w the hundreds of others the House has passed. God I can’t wait for a Blue wave to take back the Senate & WH so this government will return working FOR the people of US-not this partisan BULLSHIT. VoteBlueNoMatterWho
Too late for a country that’s supposedly the world power. But like they say never too late. So the year is 2020 and we need a bill to specify that lynching is wrong? Wtf. Hell yes it is a hate crime! burning2020 Fine! I’LL RT It. NYT Look forward to this being applied against urban gangbangers, who target black males for killing because they think they can get away with it easier
I thought lynching was worse then a hate crime i thought it was murder, I'm confused. MinnieMazzerati That still goes on?! Hahahaha. I mean that would be defined as 1st degree murder.
House to take historic vote to make lynching a federal crimeLawmakers will take a historic vote on Wednesday when the House of Representatives takes up legislation to make lynching a federal crime. As with all things on the woke left, this is utterly pointless.... Take a vote WTF!! This law should be passed with no questions asked! This is what they waste their time with. Maybe make it a federal crime to bomb brown people overseas
Looooooooooooong over due,and she admitted she lied Sooooooo lynching is not....a....hate....crime 🤔🤔 This touches my heart & soul 🙌🏾 Well it’s about time and why did it take so long? What was lynching considered before by lawmakers, a crime of passion? 🤯 and it only took 120 years...progress, my ass
My heart is gonna hurt forever. Wow thank god we paid to the government to get together and ban something that is already illegal. How productive. just saw it, vote was 410-4. The members who voted against were Independent Rep. Justin Amash and Republican Reps. Louie Gohmert, Thomas Massie and Ted Yoho. let's roll them out hard...!!!
Way Overdue 🤦🏾♂️oh now in 2020 it's a crime. Tf.
America has a 'gruesome' history of lynching, but it's not a federal crime. A House vote could change thatThe House is scheduled to vote Wednesday on a bipartisan bill that would make lynching a federal crime, a move supporters say is long overdue. Making a crime a crime? Because murder is already illegal, regardless of the method. The fact that it is 2020 and we dont already have this as a federal law says everything you need to know about America. Being Donald John Trump should be a crime...
The following Representatives voted no: replouiegohmert RepThomasMassie RepTedYoho justinamash The following originally voted no but changed at the last minute: SteveKingIA RepGosar RepChipRoy RepAndyBiggsAZ RepRalphNorman Wonder, when was the last time someone in America was lynched... fingers on the pulse
Glad our government has priorities Just out of curiosity, over these 120 years, was the argument in the House: 'Lynching is a hate crime!' and some people actually said 'What? Lynching? Like hanging black people from trees? HOW is that a hate crime?' So is going to pass the Senate? Because ppl are getting lynched across the country amirite?
Who determines if the perpetrator “Hates” the victim? I’m assuming it’s a mind reader. And if they don’t hate the victim does that make it ok? Wow black man in Britain here. Wtf. What was it before bad manners? So does this mean Jussie Smollett will be the first person to be charged with a hate crime for lynching?
Lego minifigure creator passes away following ALS fightThe creator of the LEGO minifigure, Jens Nygaard Knudsen, passed away last week following a battle with ALS. RIP 🙏🏽 he made the world a better place with his creation Thank you, sir. You have made my nephew happy for years. 😞
4 pieces of shit actually said no. Well that’s just common sense can we please use it more often ?!? Geez leaders get it together how good of the house to address a pressing issue of the 19 th century. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m dead I coulda been lynching my haters this whole time It'll sit on Mitch McConnell's desk forever.
How is this just getting ruled as a crime in 2020? Absurd and who the hell are the 4 that voted against it 🙄 Murder is already a crime maybe? Great gesture except Emmett wasn't lynched, he was beaten and shot upon which killing someone based on race, religion, ethnicity is already a hate crime. If yall want to atone for the 'sins of the past' how about a reparations bill or business/education grants for the descendants
thomasmassie4ky justinamash TedYoho and LouieGohmertTX1 voted AGAINST making lynching a HateCrime. votethemout Florida TEXAS Michigan Kentucky Murder is already a crime in every state and territory. Furthermore, the Constitution does not empower the federal government to prosecute 'lynching' (i.e., murder) except in cases related to a participant in a federal court proceeding. This is stupid.
Bernie Sanders' early primary success has moderate Democrats wondering about his impact on House, Senate racesModerate Democrats worry that Sanders' name at the top of the general election ticket would make it harder for Democrats running for Congress . not if Democrats stop attacking him If that’s true, if that’s how ignorant the populace is, if that’s how corporate elites will scare us - then we will reap what we sow. That’s what happens when Democrats lets socialist take over their party.
And justinamash voted against it Ah yes, this will totally stop people now that targeting them for their race itself is no longer considered a hate crime. It's the method, not justification that makes it hateful. Got it. What's next for these politicians...will they take on death by stoning or is it too soon?
4 House members voting No on Emmett Till Antilynching Act: Amash (I-MI) justinamash Gohmert (R-TX) Massie (R-KY) Yoho (R-FL) It’s 2020 and this is just now happening... Is it a hate crime if you fake a lynching and blame it on a different race? Asking for a friend.... IT TOOK 120 YEARS AND Y'ALL FINALLY GOT TO IT
Waste of time and money, virtue signaling by the democrats as usual. Emmett Till got what he deserved This is stupid.
About time! Up until now lynching was perfectly legal Democrats opposed it throughout the years, glad they finally came around. and it took this long why? replouiegohmert RepThomasMassie TedYoho justinamash Why did you vote nay on this? ☕️ Slow clap...nothing will change the past. Another way Trump is getting shit done!
Already illegal thing now more illegal. Way to go House of Reps. what year r we in?! And this is just now hitting the books?! Who were the 4 that voted nay and why? They goes my weekend plans.
Hard to believe this wasn't already a crime! Tsk tsk tsk ☹️ 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 A whole century and then some later man should’ve passed years ago The sad truth about Europeans. And who the hell were the 4 representatives that voted against it today in 2020? They should be fired immediately. Unbelievable that this is just now passing. Hate for another human on such a grand scale for simply looking different is sociopathic.
Now do guns rolandsmartin After 465 years in captivity, America has made it illegal to lynch Blackmen! Yet, America hasn’t restored the SOVEREIGNTY of Blackmen. SOVEREIGNTY is FREEDOM! VOTING is CAPITULATION & SUBORDINATION to Whitemen! ProjectSeparation Blackwomen BlackExodus BlackVote 8States

No doubt McConnell will sit on it. Oh shucks, murder is now illegal? Thank God for a woke House. How about an Anti-Pandering Bill. Traitors can be hung for treason. I understand black people were hung for being black, but white people were hung for dumb reasons as well long before then. Don’t understand why it’s a hate crime, should just be murder.
Can a black person lynch a white person? But wait! There’s Mitch of the South. People in these comments : 'but that's already a crime!' Good then why are you making a big deal out of officially outlawing it? 🤔 What the hell - 120 YEARS!! Mitch McConnell will never allow any anti-lynching bill to reach the Senate.

All the news that's fit to print or to ©cancel? الكلاب تنبح والقافله تسير... Murder was legal til now!? It about time Well glad it only took them 120 YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why, is lynching more 'hateful' than decapitation or point-blank shooting in the head, for example? Jussie Smollet is happy today. The fact that lynching was acceptable before this bill was passed, illustrates the morals of some of our fellow Americans Is this really what the House should be focused on? It is not 1850 anymore...
Literally the least you could do! 120yearslater
Most people lynched in the USA were white. First degree murder already? That did a lot? The “120-years of FAILURE” is a key point here! Long overdue. Let's see what the Senate and realDonaldTrump do with it...I suspect not much. Likely die at MoscowMitch desk along with 400 House bills can someone please advise when the last time anyone was actually lynched?
And the Senate will block it, as usual.
