If House Democrats keep pushing their two-track plan for a party-line social spending bill and a bipartisan infrastructure bill, they can't expect many GOP passengers on that second train

09/21/2021 04:30 AM EDTIf House Democrats keep pushing their two-track plan for a party-line social spending bill and a bipartisan infrastructure bill, they can't expect many GOP passengers on that second train.

Of course, Democrats are staying yoked to what they've called their two-track approach: linking the infrastructure bill crafted by their centrists to a bigger, progressive-leaning measure that would expand Medicare, boost paid leave and fight climate change.

While Democrats jockey among themselves, House Republicans are starting to confront consequential new internal dynamics of their own. Some in the GOP say they're noticing blowback from the party base, particularly aimed at the GOP senators who backed the infrastructure bill. That conservative wrath may ultimately have a chilling effect on some House Republicans who are still weighing whether to support the infrastructure plan if Democrats detach it from the party-line bill.

McCarthy, for his part, is messaging that the infrastructure and social spending bills are inextricably linked, despite the possibility that Democrats could be forced to move the former without the latter. Another moderate Republican agreed that the numbers could climb higher, saying building trades, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Business Roundtable are believed to be urging lawmakers to vote yes.

Good to see Politico is catching up to current events circa 1990.

Which brings us back to the good old way where no one is happy with anything passed.

I don’t expect much from the GOP. The bar is pretty low at the moment.

They were expecting Republicans? News to me

As if you could ever expect the GOP to do anything other than cut corporate taxes and blow wholes in the debt

What, of any of significance, has the GOP brought to the table? Are they just against compromising just to obstruct?

GQP will never support any bill that's for the people

The republicans need to see that Americans are watching and see them for the obstacle they are & WE AREN’T HAPPY.

Judges block N.C. GOP voter ID law as discriminatoryA majority of a 3-judge panel struck down a GOP voter ID law in North Carolina as intentionally discriminatory against Black voters. Allison Riggs, whose group brought the lawsuit, describes how the court criticized the GOP for rushing through this voter ID law designed to “entrench its power” by excluding voters of color. State Sen. Gladys Robinson says fighting voter discrimination is a “constant battle” in North Carolina, but she’s “proud” of the court’s ruling. Nothing new for the South. In the North the politicians used voter district gerrymandering making sure the minority neighborhoods had no power. Bigotry is bigotry! Republicans should be thrilled this failed because the voter ID law could have been turned into: no CDC card and ID card, no entry into restaurants, bars, stores etc. This is literally what it’s ALL about. The Texas LT doesn’t even try to hide it. Immigrants are their fear as well as they know the less white the US gets, their power continues to fade. It’s ALL about racism and fear.
