Doctors are turning to an old idea for treating COVID-19: using plasma from recovered patients to treat those infected with the coronavirus. The approach has been around since the 1890s — and was used more recently to treat SARS and Ebola.

After a period of quarantine at home separated from her children, Tiffany Pinckney recovered from COVID-19. She has become one of the country's first volunteer donors of plasma as part of an experiment to treat COVID-19 patients. After a period of quarantine at home separated from her children, Tiffany Pinckney recovered from COVID-19. She has become one of the country's first volunteer donors of plasma as part of an experiment to treat COVID-19 patients.

To facilitate that approach, a consortium of 50 hospitals and universities have created the National COVID-19 Convalescent Plasma Project. This week, the Project launched afor patients, health care providers and potential donors. The idea is to provide"one-stop shopping" for people interested in getting information about using the approach.

The idea is fairly straightforward: patients who have recovered from the virus must have mounted a robust immune response to the infection. Sharing the antibodies from that immune response that linger in their plasma could help others recover.

Are you pushing an unapproved therapy? Giving people hope? 🤷🏽‍♂️

Il problema maggiore credo sia farlo dall oggi al domani per tutti noi diventa un po’ complicato:-((

I need the test that detects antibodies to determine if I had it!

For those of us who think we may have had Covid-19. Please urge blood banks to offer serum testing for antibodies for those who would like to donate our plasma. (preferably on site)

Would be nice if you could get tested for possibly already having the virus. Very strong suspicion my whole family got it around 2/25. I'd gladly donate plasma.

I sincerely hope this helps, but I'm also secretly terrified that this is how the zombies happen. COVID19Pandemic COVID19 coronavirus CoronavirusPandemic zombies

COVID-19 is a strain of SARS. Couldn't previous SARS treatment (if there were any) possibly create a breakthrough for the new strand?

Another reason why more testing is key! If so many people have no/low symptoms, without testing, they are out of the mix as possible plasma donors. I'd go this second to donate if I knew I had had it and could help.

AnneHow16650262 I hope this remedy will decrease our pain.

Not old, but proven

Sometimes what we know is the best solution. All seriousness aside, that is one BOUNTIFUL healthcare worker.

Yeah the issue with that solutions is still that there is not enough test availible to re-test recovered patients to make sure they are free of the virus to donate blood..it all comes down to the same shit the goverment stupid incompetence to test people with and without symtoms

LeanOnMe

Try leaches.

At the same time the FDA does not allow gay people to donate blood (or plasma)!!!!

How covid-19 is driving public-sector innovationAcross Britain’s public sector, innovation that was previously unthinkable is happening Another bit of good positive news. No new hospitals are built in the UK. They just misused exhibition centres and ice rings but putting cardboard walls but no equipment. There are no 30,000 ventilators, just 30 - remember? This is a shameful farce. Oh I hope so. To think that we won't actually get anything out of this whole thing, where every everyday thing was destroyed for no reason. I want a better world out of this, at the end.
