Brigham and Women’s Hospital outside Boston said research has shown that transplant recipients are at higher risk than non-transplant patients of dying from the coronavirus.

This Nov. 27, 2021, photo provided by Tracey Ferguson shows her son D.J. Ferguson initially being treated at Milford, Mass. Regional Medical Center. Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston is defending itself after Ferguson's family claimed he was denied a new heart for refusing to be vaccinated against COVID-19, saying most transplant programs around the country set similar requirements to improve patients' chances of survival. MENDON, Mass.

D.J.’s mother, Tracey Ferguson, insists that her son isn’t against vaccinations, noting he’s had other immunizations in the past. But the trained nurse said Wednesday that he’s been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation — an irregular and often rapid heart rhythm — and that he has concerns about the side effects of the COVID-19 vaccine.

The hospital said research has shown that transplant recipients are at higher risk than non-transplant patients of dying from COVID-19, and that its policies are in line with the recommendations of the American Society of Transplantation and other health organizations. Hospitals in other states have faced similar criticism for denying transplants to patients who weren’t vaccinated against COVID-19.

“A donor heart is a precious and scarce gift which must be cared for well,” said Dr. Howard Eisen, medical director for the advanced heart failure program at Penn State University in Hershey, Pennsylvania. “Our goal is to preserve patient survival and good outcomes post-transplant.

He refused to follow the protocols. Change the headline. He wasn’t denied anything.

Sue the hospital. There is a reason .ost who have heart issue do not get the vaccine. Take them all the way.

I can think of all 'cool things' we should mandate in order for recipients to 'get things'.

Hey - choose your own adventure.

Heart patient refuses vaccination, demonstrates he is unwilling to follow protocols to ensure survival.

I don’t wish ill on the guy but he made his choice.

Not shocking, COVID can cause blood clots resulting in heart attack or stroke. Why would they place a heart in someone who isn’t willing to take every step to protect their own health.

Do not assume COVID pandemic reaching 'end game', warns WHOGENEVA (Reuters) -The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) warned on Monday that it was dangerous to assume the Omicron variant would herald the end of COVID-19's acutest phase, exhorting nations to stay focused to beat the pandemic. 'It’s dangerous to assume that Omicron will be the last variant and that we are in the end game,' Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a WHO executive board meeting of the two-year pandemic that has killed nearly 6 million people. Though Omicron has sent total cases soaring to nearly 350 million, its less lethal impact and the increasing prevalence of vaccines has led to optimism in some parts that the worst of the pandemic may have passed. We have the tools to end it, we need to use them wisely. God gave us the tools.
