Hong Kong in limbo 25 years after British handover to China

HONG KONG (AP) — When the British handed its colony Hong Kong to Beijing in 1997, it was promised 50 years of self-government and freedoms of assembly, speech and press that are not allowed Chinese on the Communist-ruled mainland.

25 years after Britain handed Hong Kong over to China, the city is in limbo. Beijing has been expanding its control over the vibrant, global hub. Residents still enjoy greater autonomy and civil liberties than other Chinese, but many protests are banned.
