For some, prom can be one of the most magical nights of the entire school year. From the dancing to the gorgeous gowns, it's an evening to never forget, and Netflix hopes to capture some of that fun in its upcoming musical film,, starring Jo Ellen Pellman, James Corden, Nicole Kidman, Keegan-Michael Key, and Meryl Streep.
In the film's first trailer, which debuted this week ahead of its December 11 premiere, viewers will find that for one teenager, prom hasn't exactly turned out as she planned. Adapted from the Tony-nominated Broadway musical,centers on fictional high school student Emma Nolan , who dreamed of attending the big dance on the arm of her girlfriend, Alyssa . Unfortunately, the school's head of the PTA prohibits this from happening — but Emma doesn't let it get her down for long.
Naturally, Emma takes her story to the Internet, and a viral video captures the attention of some down-on-their-luck Broadway superstars. Traveling from New York City to Emma's small Indiana hometown, the actors — portrayed by Streep, Corden, Kidman, and Andrew Rannells — decide they're going to make Emma's prom dreams come true.
The trailer only gives us the smallest peek at what's sure to be a spectacular night, and the musical film looks to be filled with feel good moments, and plenty of unforgettable dance numbers. And with Ryan Murphy at the director's helm, there's sure to be a few surprises., Murphy noted how the musical had made an immediate impact on him.
