That’s also a problem for the broader rural economy, from community banks and farm equipment makers to non-agricultural businesses that still rely on the sector to keep money flowing to the area.
“It’s one more source of uncertainty, and this is a time of a lot of uncertainty,” Westhoff said. “How much more complicated can we make this for producers?”Early this year, before the coronavirus started spreading in the U.S., industry groups and farm-state lawmakers were already calling for USDA to extend the trade bailout program for a third year — even though Trump had just signed a phase one pact with China that he touted as a historic win for U.S.
Once the coronavirus hit the U.S., any hopes for a farm rebound in 2020 were dashed, and the need for a surge of government payments to keep farmers afloat was widely accepted in Washington. Schools, restaurants and meatpacking plants shut down, and producers left without buyers were forced to start dumping milk, euthanizing livestock and plowing fruits and vegetables into the ground.
Trump counts farmers and ranchers as some of his most loyal supporters, and he’s quick to talk up his trade bailout in stump speeches and on Twitter. “Our great farmers will receive another major round of ‘cash,’ compliments of China tariffs, prior to Thanksgiving,”That has bought the president significant support in rural America.
The Trump administration has also faced accusations of using the trade bailout to shore up the president’s political standing with a key constituency.
This proposal by Sen. Gillibrand would greatly help small family farmers. We need people to call their Senators ask them to cosponsor and push for inclusion in the next COVID19 stimulus and share my pinned tweet thread for others to call:
Government payments to farmers have surged to historic levels under President Donald Trump as the Agriculture Department floods the industry with cash to stem the financial losses from Trump’s tariff fights and the coronavirus pandemic
Sadly, the majority of the money went to corporate farms, including those now owned by the Chinese and Senator Grassley. The small farmers got the shaft.
Those damn right wing socialists...something something
Trump was so stupid to take away the bread and butter from all farmers!! Now who is paying for Trumps mistakes? This was wrong of Trump! The same way he messed them up is the same was he is messing up all our country,if we let him! AmericaStrongerWithBiden November3rdVOTEBiden
Socialist Agricultural Welfare
He only sees in the short term. He's not a strategic planner. If he sees or analyzes anything at all.
While calling Democrats ‘Socialists’, the Republicans actually implement the most Socialistic policies we’ve ever seen. This is a special kind of hypocrisy. And the Republican base is just so damn stupid, they can not comprehend this.
$32 Billion to farmers this year. Does that sound like trade deal with China is working?
The GOP swears they’ll never let Socialism take hold in America and yet they’re the biggest purveyors of it. Farm subsidies have always been an act of Socialism.
Wait, I thought they wanted “smaller” government 😉
USA farm subsidies have been going on for yonks. Draw your own conclusions here but it doesn’t take a genius to understand that USA farmers are one of the ‘least’ productive in the western world.....and growing inexorably worse/less competitive/reliant on government free handouts
Not sure why the Democrats are not using this as an ad campaign targeting Trump and Republicans as 'this is what being socialist is all about'. Make these farmers, who are reliably Republicans, think socialism as not a bad thing after all, so Trump cannot use it as an attack.

Corporate welfare. Letem go out of business. That's what Repubs say to American farmers.
Ohh no, I guess putting tarrifs on China and subsiding USA farmers wasn’t the smartest move? Should expect that from the dumbest USA president yet, and that’s saying something realDonaldTrump
Trump giving money to all his friends.
