in last week’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, researchers with the CDC and local health authorities monitored COVID-19 data in Kansas before and after the state’s governor issued an executive order requiring masks in public spaces. The mandate came on July 3 and did leave room for individual counties to opt out.
The results showed that, in the 24 counties that complied with the mask mandate, COVID-19 cases fell in the two months after the governor issued the mandate. In the month before the mandate, the counties that complied had seen about 60 cases per day . On the day the mandate went into effect, they had an average of 333 cases per day . And in the weeks after the mandate, their numbers leveled off and ultimately saw a 6% decrease, hovering around 310 new daily cases and 16 cases per 100,000 people.
But case numbers continued to climb in the 81 counties that opted out of the mandate. Before the mandate, these counties had an average of 40 new cases every day , which had increased to an average of 59 new cases per day when the mask mandate would have gone into effect. After that point, the number of new daily cases nearly doubled to 118 per day in the next month.
These results suggest that a mask mandate can help contain COVID-19 and prevent the virus from spreading. There are some limitations here, however. First off, this is just a study of counties in one state, so it’s not clear whether other states would show the same pattern. But previous
