Most leaders will tell you that they want to hear good news soon and bad news sooner for very good reason—the more lead time you have to address a problem, the higher your likelihood of solving it. Unfortunately though, too many teams and organizations don’t have cultures of candor. Instead, they have cultures of fear where no one wants to tell the boss she’s got an “ugly baby,” question a popular idea or point out risks associated with a new project.
High candor teams are willing to find their vulnerabilities and fix them, but candor requires high levels of trust, and many teams simply don’t have it. Leaders committed to building high candor environments must do so intentionally. It just doesn’t happen by accident.
