What the Huawei Android ban means for Huawei smartphone owners:

How will my Huawei phone be affected?

Outside of the base Android operating system , Google currently licenses Huawei services such as the Play Store, Gmail, Google Maps and other Google apps. The ban means that Google won’t be able to license those services to new Huawei devices. Google has said, though, that Google’s services will still function on existing Huawei devices.

For Huawei users' questions regarding our steps to comply w/ the recent US government actions: We assure you while we are complying with all US gov't requirements, services like Google Play & security from Google Play Protect will keep functioning on your existing Huawei device.Yes. Android is open source and available to anyone to wants to use it, so the base operating system isn’t affected. Only the licensed services are caught up in the ban.

, it’s not clear how that will delay the process or if Huawei has a system to deliver those updates .The language of Google’s statement that “existing” devices will continue to function as normal suggests that new devices will be impacted more significantly. It’s not exactly clear where future Huawei and Honor devices stand, but it doesn’t look good.

Huawei is building its own operating system, and currently sells devices without Google Play Services in China where it is banned, but making a new OS - with its own apps - is a mammoth task and customers may not be interested - or inclined - to wait.
