The mums were made by the advanced floral design class at the high school. The class meets for 45 minutes a day Monday through Friday, and according to teacher Shawna Braden, it took the class two and a half weeks to make the mums.. “If we have bigger and better, the students can showcase their creativeness.”The mums used hundreds of feet of ribbon, and the class had to scavenge for a piece of cardboard big enough to be the backing for the mums, senior Neely Smith told NewsWest 9.
Braden got the idea for the project after seeing other Texas high schools make mums in class last year. Her class is part of the Blossoming Bulldogs Program, which gives Midland High School students hands-on florist experience. Locals can support the program by purchasing the students’ arrangements, and students can earn industry certificates to use in a career in floral design after graduation.
“I have several students who are already working at local flower shops,” Braden said in a press release from the district. “It’s great experience and gives students exposure to floral design as a business.”Ultimately, though, this project was about showing their school spirit. The mums are on display in the school library, and it took 10 people to transport each mum from the floral design classroom to the library.
