Abortion access tends to be a testy topic among the disabled community for many reasons—not the least among them is that both sides of the argument tend to use disabled people like weapons against the other.

14-year coma patient

The conversation around reproductive care and abortion access is poised to be yet another conversation in which disability erasure will be the case, but it doesn’t have to repeat the pitfalls of #MeToo. It needs to be noted that abortion access cannot be seen as a prescriptive measure when it comes to the intersection of disability and pregnancy. There are many disabled people who want to be parents and able-bodied parents who want to carry a disabled child to term. To assume that abortion access is a cure-all for the existence of disability ignores the fact that disability is a natural aspect of the human experience. Abortion will not erase the existence of disability.

Assault and rape should not be the only circumstances in which disabled people should be given access to the reproductive care they need but the means of conception often play a major role.
