After two months of unprecedented surges fueled by the omicron variant, the latest wave of the coronavirus appears to be letting up in the United States.over the weekend he is “as confident as you can be” that omicron will have peaked in most states by mid-February. The rate of new COVID-19 cases is “going in the right direction,” Fauci told ABC’sSunday.

Globally, other public health officials are also offering wary-but-optimistic assessments of the state of the pandemic. The spread of the omicron variant offers “plausible hope for stabilization and normalization,”Monday. He cautioned that “it is far too early to relax” and “almost a given that new COVID-19 variants will emerge and return,” but that he is “hopeful we can end the emergency phase [of the pandemic] in 2022.

While future variants—as well as global vaccine inequity—generally remain serious concerns, Fauci nonetheless over the weekend expressed confidence that a return to normalcy is on the horizon. The hope, he said, is that the national level of infection will in the coming months “get to below what I call that area of control,” meaning COVID-19 cases are “there, but they don’t disrupt society.
