The most selective colleges continue to post historically low acceptance rates as students continue to clamor for brand namesBusiness Journals’

analysis of federal data found four-year colleges with at least 2,500 applications for the fall 2021 semester posted an average acceptance rate of 68%. Twenty-two colleges posted single-digit acceptance rates in 2021 and 145 schools posted acceptance rates under 50%. The analysis, which included 866 total U.S. colleges, shows an average matriculation rate of 23%. The 65 colleges with the lowest acceptance rates all posted above-average matriculation rates, which measure the percentage of students that accept admission offers.new national List of America's Most Selective Colleges and Universities.

The college application process has become more competitive overall in recent years as institutions across the country have stepped away from standardized exam requirements. FairTest: National Center for Fair & Open Testing, the organization pushing for colleges to use factors beyond exam scores, recently said 1,450 U.S. colleges no longer require ACT or SAT scores.
