Haitian refugees seeking to escape poverty and upheaval in their home country said they will not be deterred by U.S. plans to speedily send them back. Thousands of migrants remained encamped on the Texas border after crossing from Mexico.

Scores of people waded back and forth across the Rio Grande on Saturday afternoon, re-entering Mexico to purchase water, food and diapers in Ciudad Acuña before returning to the Texas encampment under and near a bridge in the border city of Del Rio.

A U.S. official told The Associated Press on Friday that the U.S would likely fly the migrants out of the country on five to eight flights a day, starting Sunday, while another official expected no more than two a day and said everyone would be tested for COVID-19. The first official said operational capacity and Haiti’s willingness to accept flights would determine how many flights there would be.

Haitians have been migrating to the U.S. in large numbers from South America for several years, many having left their Caribbean nation after a devastating 2010 earthquake. After jobs dried up from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, many made the dangerous trek by foot, bus and car to the U.S. border, including through the infamous Darien Gap, a Panamanian jungle.

It is unclear how such a large number amassed so quickly, though many Haitians have been assembling in camps on the Mexican side of the border to wait while deciding whether to attempt entry into the U.S. Homeland Security’s plan announced Saturday signals a shift to use of pandemic-related order for immediate expulsion to Haiti without an opportunity to claim asylum, the official said.

The pandemic-related order to immediately expel migrants without giving them the opportunity to seek asylum that was introduced in March 2020 remains in effect, but unaccompanied children and many families have been exempt. During his first month in office, Biden chose to exempt children traveling alone on humanitarian grounds.

So all those poor Haitians that are in Mexico &Central America have thousands of dollars to pay for bus trips to just ONE specific Texas border town and entry-NOT other states- NOT other entries-just one. Who paid for their buses?Who told them they would get into US?GOP/Abbott

Over the years this government has done everything possible to keep Haiti from becoming a prosperous country including using military force to remove their elected presidents and replacing them with puppets!!

They traveled 1188 miles to be called N**** and have Biden as President? Gave up all they owned to be Black in America? From Haitian national to BLM? What motivation can you give me. Educate me. Same with Mexico. Countries without Gay Rights are our refugees. GayRightsWorldwide

In 2017 Haiti banned Gay Marriage and open displays. Mexico prohibits Gay Marriage in 32 states. First pro-gay ruling in Mexico was last month. Beaten Tortured Killed. Refugees want freedom to have families without shame.

They’re real refugees, yet they’re turned back?

They aren't refugees. They've traveled from Latin American countries in the belief that the Biden administration will let them in. I personally know 3 Haitians who've traveled from Chile, in spite of having stable Jobs and a decent standard of living here.

'Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, The wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!'

Jorge Luis Mora Castillo, a 48-year-old from Cuba, said he arrived Saturday in Acuna & also planned to cross into the U.S. Castillo said his family paid smugglers $12,000 to take him, his wife & their son out of Paraguay, a South American nation where they had lived for 4 years.

Sending them back in starvation ,It is Human Right abusing!US should help the poor ,as the rumors that CIA killed their President.

UNHaiti MexOnu UN_Liberia GovernmentZA American colonialists are the illegal ones vvaitaminvte

No problem! Human rights champions, US and EU, Aussies, UK, Japan can save them by admitting as refugees.

Hmm, so did all of them become biblical and have the ability to walk on water? I find it hard to believe they all rode rickety rafts/boats to Mexico and walked that distance. This isn't adding up.

How did they get to the border from Haiti?

Having visited Haiti some years ago, beautiful beaches in Jakmel-lovely people, creative arts & crafts. Port of Prince crowed & everywhere such poverty but hearing voodoo drums at night was spirited.Sad this beautiful country robbed & ruined by greed could have been a vacation dest

I get why people are upset about the immigrants. However, wouldn't it be awesome if we put our heads together and tried to find a solution? For example, i think governments should hold each other responsible through harsh sanctions. I know, dilusional.

Haiti is an island nation. Something is not right about this. It was arranged.

I’m glad a lot of attention is being paid to that plus a lot of attention to the January 6 supporters. This is a complicated country and it will fight through the stresses that are pulling on both ends

Where is Kamala Harris? VP ? Why does every person that crosses the border get to stay except for Black People (Haitians)? Kamals can go to a college alma mater event but not address this crisis! Go and take care of these poor people

The emigrants problem in the world is sustained by the UN failure to establish a common approach and conflicting global laxity. If the world resources are used to make inclusively the countries of origin a safer place this would manage the exodus for illusive life in the west!

We have our own impoverished people to help here. Go home and fix your own country.

Latin American refugees... Let them in all day. Haitian refugees... Reject and send back. Cuban refugees... Vehemently swear off immigration. Tell me why the DNC is so particular with it's policy?

They are escaping for a reason. We should find a way to welcome them.
