of recovery. To cope, she turned to her husband, Patrick, and Stanley, 2, for encouragement.
“He [Stanley] doesn’t care that I’m injured,” she said. “He has no idea what’s going on. So just being able to go and play with him and spend some time with him was a huge thing that I relied on.”, like calendars, dates, or race discussions. Instead, she wanted to focus on being patient in the present moment.
“I spent so much time and effort on the surgery, I didn’t want to delay [recovering] any longer,” she said. “I just wanted to take it at the pace that I could so I wouldn’t have a big step backward. And for me, that [meant] focusing on no timelines, not talking about racing, not thinking about it. Just focusing on getting healthy. Once I was healthy, then I could move on.”
In the months following the operation, Jorgensen built up enough of a base to rejoin the Bowerman team for workouts a few weeks before Christmas 2019. This time around, she ran lower mileage and incorporated cross-training sessions on the bike and in the pool three or four days a week. For several weeks, the group trained together at altitude in Woodland Park, Colorado.
On Friday, February 14, Jorgensen is planning to race the 5,000 meters at the Indoor Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington. It will be her first time competing since October 2018.
