Detective Rod Simpkins' shooting of Carl Dorsey was captured on surveillance footage

A state grand jury declined to indict a Newark police detective in the fatal shooting of an unarmed man during an encounter minutes after midnight on New Year’s Day 2021, Attorney General Matthew Platkin’s office announced Thursday.death of Carl Dorsey“The investigation included interviews of witnesses, collection of forensic evidence, review of video and autopsy results from the medical examiner,” the announcement stated.

On the video, an unmarked police cruiser double parks in front of a row of townhouses, and several officers exit and begin to run out of the frame in response to what police later said was a report of gunfire. Dorsey runs into the frame and around the front of the car, colliding with Simpkins. Hamm also criticized the “lack of transparency” of the grand jury process, which involves secret presentations closed to the public. “All we know is what is in the public statement of the attorney general’s office,” he said. “So, it really is next to impossible to offer a complete and balanced assessment.”in State Superior Court, and the family’s lawyer, Robert Tarver, has accused Platkin of refusing to meet with Dorsey’s family or provide any update in the case.
