Make your contribution now and help Gothamist thrive in 2023.new Grand Central Madison train terminal
The journey to the subways in Grand Central, which was timed by a Gothamist reporter on Wednesday, is hardly faster than a subway ride from Penn Station. “I’m trying to see if it’s worth it and I don’t know,” Divine said. “Those stairs are really steep. Imagine having a couple drinks in you and losing your balance? Forget it, you’re going to end up in the hospital.”
Compare that to the subway trip from the 4/5/6 subway platforms at Grand Central to the LIRR platforms at Penn Station, which requires a ride on the Times Square shuttle and a transfer to the 1, 2 or 3 train. That amounts to a difference of 100 seconds during regular, midday service — or roughly 14 hours of saved time per year for daily riders.
This makes NO SENSE. People going to GCM aren’t going to the shuttle platform they’re going in the OTHER DIRECTION. They have direct access to 48th & Park without entering GCT. Plus there are many blgs like 1 Vanderbilt - & more on the way from the recent Midtown East rezoning...
First it was trains are empty so this project is a failure now it’s their “limited shuttle service” is not saving anyone time? Why are New Yorkers who have been on a train not writing these articles? ITS PUBLIC INFORMATION!? Who the fuck writes this nonsense?
With all the stairwells, corridors and escalators needed to make it down 17 stories underground to the platform we’ve decided to opt out. Seems like a gnarly death trap and Moynihan is pretty nice these days.
London’s crossrail cost $24 billion and delivered a full network of rail that connects lines through the area. Flawed, maybe. But for half of that, we got one station going to the sub basement of GCT, because MetroNorth and lirr can’t play nice.
It’s taken minutes of my commute from NJ the past couple days by freeing up tracks at Penn, which also has the added benefit of putting me closer to the 8th Ave subway, so there’s that.
I need a video of this journey from the deep
But what a fallout shelter it is!
lmao true, for context it's like a brisk 10 min, slow 25 min walk between these stations.
Those with Fitbits will love it.
Yeah but, Penn station
Out of curiosity, what about handicapped people? Last time I took the subway with handicap friend, we had to walk WAY out of the way to find elevators, which was incredibly, well, stupid. Handicapped folk should have the closest access points.
