Google is threatening to make its search engine unavailable in Australia if the government proceeds with plans to make tech giants pay for news content.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Google on Friday threatened to make its search engine unavailable in Australia if the government went ahead with plans to make tech giants pay for news content....

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison quickly hit back, saying “we don’t respond to threats.”“Australia makes our rules for things you can do in Australia,” Morrison told reporters in Brisbane. “That’s done in our Parliament. It’s done by our government. And that’s how things work here in Australia.”

Morrison’s comments came after Mel Silva, the managing director of Google Australia and New Zealand, told a Senate inquiry into the bill that the new rules would be unworkable.ADVERTISEMENT“If this version of the code were to become law, it would give us no real choice but to stop making Google search available in Australia,” Silva told senators. “And that would be a bad outcome not only for us, but also for the Australian people, media diversity, and the small businesses who use our products every day.”

The mandatory code of conduct proposed by the government aims to make Google and Facebook pay Australian media companies fairly for using news content they siphon from news sites.Silva said it was willing to pay a wide and diverse group of news publishers for the value they added, but not under the rules as proposed, which included payments for links and snippets. headtopics.com

She said the code’s “biased arbitration model” also posed unmanageable financial and operational risks for Google. She suggested a series of tweaks to the bill.“We feel there is a workable path forward,” Silva said.Like in many other countries, Google dominates internet searches in Australia. Silva told senators about 95% of searches in the nation are done through Google.

Asked by one senator how much tax it pays, Silva said last year it paid about 59 million Australian dollars ($46 million) on revenues of AU$4.8 billion ($3.7 billion).Facebook also opposes the rules and has threatened to remove news stories from its site in Australia. Simon Milner, a Facebook vice president, said the sheer volume of deals it would have to strike would be unworkable.

The Australia Institute, an independent think tank, said lawmakers should stand firm against Google’s bullying.“Google’s testimony today is part of a pattern of threatening behavior that is chilling for anyone who values our democracy,” said Peter Lewis, the director of the institute’s Centre for Responsible Technology.

goodinohio Why is this a problem? There are a dozen search engines that will step right in. The ad money far exceeds the content fees. China seems to be doing fine without google There are other search engines !!! CaraMia200 This is unusual, governments & big corporations going at it, I thought they were joined at the hip strip mining the planet. Could be the start of the end of capitalism? There’s nothing left to feed on so they feed on themselves.

Do they know Google is used for much much more than looking at newspapers? It's like going to the national library and only looking at the todays magazine section. auspol Big tech shows their real faces when challenged. The knives come out. Use Ecosia search engine they plant a tree for every search done.

They should pay Who thought taxing tech corps means they just go away. Big tech at it again. People should really be concerned that information is funneled through a handful of billionaires laureningram Is Alta Vista still out there ? google decides it's a great idea to make threaten an entire country to prove its an unregulated monopoly and should face anti trust law suits around the world. What a great idea.

Would there be significant advantage for Google when they provide other services like Gmail, Google Cloud, Google Domains, Google Docs, etc, to Australian people after they close their search engine?🤸‍♂️🤸🤸‍♀️ This would also show people there are other search engines that work as well as Google. It would be great as are people use other engines, they will likely not go back to Google. This would then hurt Google far worse as people will tell others overseas about the other engines

No problem. Issuing duck duck go and is great. Unbiased search results Tear down google! Australians win in the long run I’d prefer to see Murdoch & Nine leave Australia than Google. Sorry AAP, the poor performance of Australian journalists doesn’t endear them. This is an example of how the Australian government is beholden to News media companies. It has nothing to do with fairness

Screw Google and go DuckDuckGo Australia. DuckDuckGo - make the switch. I have 'thank u, next' search engine Quite the mixed bag, Google can get nationalized. On the other hand, Australia does not have a good approach to technology. letgooglego Oh well. Bye, cnts. 🙄🤦‍♀️ That’s a threat? 🤣🤣🤣 The proposed code wants Google to pay for *linking* to news content. Google isn't using news content. This is not how a free and open Web works. See what Tim Berners-Lee has to say on this broken code:

Guess it's a great time to degooglethen using DDG or searx or startpage as search engines are way better!! More privacy and stopping them from stealing your data! Google has just to be a search engine. Why does it steal and display content from other web sites? Time to switch to DuckDuckGo Australia! There are other search engines that don’t record your every keystroke.

Google can simply stop linking to news agencies if they do not want the free advertising. See how much they like having to pay for Google Ads so people actually remember they exist. Australia really doesn’t give a shit and it’s amazing. $GOOG is not a Nation or a Government. Just a private company. This is like McConnell making demands when he knows he is the minority.

Hey wait what? So? Another company can make a search engine for Australia as good as Google's. hughriminton Media turning into full blown rentseekers Stand firm australia. Google should have to pay Fair taxes as well as any company that conducts business in any country. They should not get away with deeply discounted content just because they are a techgiant.

Id be sooooooo fucking annoyed. Can we do that here!!!!? Let google and Facebook bitch about it. If Google wants to stop us from using search, that's fine. The others will take their market share. Google used to be cool before they became corporate. Now they are just a huge turd with lots of cash. Cut their power chords....No Electricity is for You!!, Goolag.

Just use incognito mode. They'll never know. google goodbye, au revoir, auf wiedersehen, sayonara, adios, ciao, Da svidania! Make em pay Thank you for your help Mr Chris, you always know how to make life brighter for everyone you know I'll always trade under your platform You thought me how to earn and am fully happy for that Message Mr Chris and start up trading earn weekly chris_grey2

I'm using Bing now anyway. The level of paid-for positioning in Google has reached a point where it's almost useless to find something requiring a little research. US Tech colonialism... To all people recommending DuckDuckGo. I did a very extensive search for the same info on both Google and DuckDuckGo, and DuckDuckGo didn't even give me a tenth of relevant hits that Google gave me. DuckDuckGo isn't good enough IMHO, especially if you're looking for older info.

I hate Australia, it is a police state. I cannot leave ether since o ly Australia and North Korea do not allow their citizens to travel overseas Microsoft be like DuckDuckGo is an alternative Google Go get them Australia! how will they ever survive? Look at Morrison’s track record. China trade - destroyed. Holden - gone. East coast - burned to a cinder. Ruby Princess - released Covid. 2000 dead people from Robodebt. 800 aged care dead from incompentence. Trump’s BFF. Now unplugging the internet? auspol ScomosGottaGo

You don’t need Google Fuck australia I don't get it. If I search for something, I get links to a million sources, which is good for those sources. If I go to Google News, I get links to sources on current topics, which is also good for those sources. Why should Google pay for that? Hey Google... What happened to 'Don't Be Evil'?

Later Google. Google can suck it. We will use another search engine. Peak profot seeking bullshit. haha, that's what they did in china too, not a alot of ppl know that. That would be great for other competitors! Go Australia🤞 Wont be missed Australia create your own Google break the monoply Open the door for another to come through and take over. DuckDuckGo

Microsoft should have known this is what it takes to get people to use Bing. Fine. DuckDuckGo is better anyway. Google is a nice-to-have, not a can't-live-without. So is google saying that it should be permitted to use content obtained from news companies or other sources for free Yet they themselves make money from that content , so there should be a fee structure involved so everyone benefits!

Let’s be honest Google is shite now the internet is pathetic Australia, call there bluf I’m sure the Australians will find a way around it to still get Google. LMAO This does not change the fact that in Australia there are 48 million kangaroos and in Uruguay there are 3,457,380 inhabitants. So if the kangaroos decide to invade Uruguay, each Uruguayan will have to fight 14 kangaroos.
