From left: Anya Taylor-Joy in 'The Queen's Gambit,' Cate Blanchett in 'Mrs. America' and John Boyega in 'Small Axe'Gillian Anderson portrays former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Netflix's royal dramaWhen series creator Pete Morgan asked Anderson"out of the blue" if he would want to play Thatcher, she didn't have to think long.

Asked how she researched her real-life character, Blanchett says:"It sounds a bit counterintuitive, but for me, the character is strangely the last point of entry. I had heard of Phyllis Schlafly but didn’t really know the details of her life. Sarah [Paulson] and I were makingin the lead-up to the 2016 election, and a lot of this stuff came into play for me then.

The star of the Netflix series explains:"There's a fine line with Emily. She's expecting Doug [Roe Hartrampf] to come to Paris and really excited about it, but then in this call, she realizes that he's not coming. Therefore, she has to choose between herself and her journey — what she might gain from all of these exciting things happening for her and self-growth — or staying in a relationship where clearly the other person isn't as willing to give as much as she is.

Daniels stars opposite, Brendan Gleeson, who played President Trump."Casting was a big deal," Daniesl says."And as [writer-director Billy Ray] will tell you, when he sat in the dressing room of, the first question I had for him was, 'Is Showtime gonna pay for good actors around me?' Because half my performance is in the other actor."a lot of dialogue for a lot of people and we need people who were gonna come in, off-book, ready to go, take one.

Garner's first act of reckless abandon on Ozark was an audition in front of a casting assistant in a small New York office in 2016. Ruth doesn't appear in the show's pilot, so Garner was given a mock scene to perform, a monologue that she delivers to her character's cousin, Charlie Tahan's Wyatt, about Ruth wanting a better life for him."I remember thinking, 'Oh my God, this character is amazing,'"Garner says."'There's so much to it.

Grant explains how he approached the character."I've always had notes in my script margins, but this one was more complicated than usual, because there are two people in the margin. I called them 'I.J.' and 'J.B.' 'J.B.' was the real sociopath. I called him 'John Boy,' because I assumed that's what his mother called him as he grew up as this spoiled and wonderful über-kid; he knows he's guilty. Then there was 'I.J.
