A cardiologist testified Monday that George Floyd could have survived if Derek Chauvin had released him from his restraint during the more than nine minutes in which the former Minneapolis police officer knelt on Mr. Floyd’s neck and back.

Mr. Chauvin is on trial in Minneapolis for second- and third-degree murder. Prosecutors say he killed Mr. Floyd by kneeling on his neck and back while he was lying handcuffed in the prone positionwhen officers were arresting him. He has pleaded not guilty. His lawyer, Eric Nelson, has argued that Mr. Floyd died of a drug overdose and a heart condition.

Jonathan Rich, a cardiologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, said that Mr. Floyd died of a lack of oxygen due to his restraint in the prone position with Mr. Chauvin and two other officers on top of him.“There was one moment in the video where I heard one of the officers saying, ‘I think he is passing out,’” Dr. Rich said.
