Democrats and Republicans may be experiencing this year's gas pump pain differently, a real-life, unintentional impact of the self-sorting that has come to define modern American politics.

WASHINGTON — As Thanksgiving and Christmas near, it's not uncommon for consumers to grouse about gas prices. It's as much a holiday tradition as Hallmark movies. But this year, the story is a little different. The last 12 months have seen a spike in gasoline prices as life has returned to something closer to a pre-Covid norm and travel picks up.

That is not the highest price ever for a gallon of gas. In fact, adjusting for inflation, it’s not even close. But, as it so often is with the economy, it's a perception that matters to voters and right now a lot of voters perceive the prices as sky-high. That’s especially true compared to last year when prices were artificially low due to the reduced travel that came with the pandemic’s first year.

The two exceptions are New Mexico, which is a rare heavily rural state that tends to vote Democratic, and Georgia, which President Joe Biden won by only a hair. And beyond the higher amounts of driving in Republican states, there is the matter of the fuel efficiency of the vehicles of choice. Americans may love pickup trucks, but they don’t all love them equally. There is a heavy red tinge to the states where pickup trucks make up the biggest percentage of new vehicle sales, according to data from Experian.

Sure Democrats trying to tell you it’s patriotic to go broke the Government knows better than you listen to what they tell you even though the rules don’t apply to them

Claiming ppl need trucks for work is strange. Most have them as a status symbol. We aren't willing to pay 60,000 for a vehicle.

So rural areas feel the pinch of gas prices more because they drive pickups and drive more miles. So what. Most every other thing costs more in cities…..rent, housing, restaurants, bars, often sales taxes, etc. etc.

Intelligent People know the Economics dealing with the High Prices . But Brainwashed will turn it into a Political reason

all ya gotta do is open oil fields back up in alaska.

I know we all probably must have heard about Bitcoin but don't know how it works I tried it a week ago by a fellow tweeter who recommended me to MIKE_BUNT_ he guided me through and i made a return of $25,000 after a week of trading, connect with him 👉MIKE_BUNT_

If you own a $95,000 pick up truck you probably can afford a gas spike. I would be more concerned about the family with the 10 year old mini van and the impact high gas prices and inflation have on them

Oh, way to make me not give a shit

Thanks to joe Biden and his democrat socialism. Screwing tax payers equally so the elite politicians can live the life of Reilly

Price gouging in nationwide and comcast should drop distributing fascist FOX news

GOP/Republicans

Wow, you guys are getting hosed...gas here in Texas in my area is still under 3 $ a gallon at about 2.87

President Biden sold America out, on the energy business to OPEC and Russia, now President Biden, is selling America out, on the electric car business, by allowing Communist China, to by the American owned Cobalt mine in Africa, that’s used in electric car batteries.

Reporting on states that provide food for the nation, requiring pickups, tractors, harvesting equipment,... shows no idea how your food gets to your table.

We got a 2008 Honda crv with 180+k miles. $60 fills my tank, i get 35-40mpg (highway, most of my drive is spent on the highway) 40 if the wind is at my back😆. I commute 78 miles a day. You can't stress over what you have no control.

The turn of the screw that the progressive left-wing media is giving the news is impressive; good or bad. It is a fact that Biden as soon as he entered stopped pumping, and the results are in sight. The rest, landscape.

Apparently, $4 a gallon gas is something that only Republicans have a great problem with. It must be that the price at the pump only affects those who don’t get their news from sources that try to convince us that inflation is a good idea.

The term pickup truck is redundant, by the way.

What a bunch of crap. NBC viewers that buy this story must be idiots. The world is grey, it is not black and white. This idea that everything is effecting you differently based on your political beliefs is toxic. This is the United States, not the Divided States.

Do we really have to define everything in politically divisive terms? A disservice, NBC.
