Judge Merrick Garland, President Biden’s pick for attorney general, promised to combat the rising threat of domestic extremism, saying that a sprawling federal investigation into the Jan. 6 Capitol riot would be his first priority if confirmed for the job

“I think this was the most heinous attack on the democratic processes that I’ve ever seen, and one that I never expected to see in my lifetime,” Judge Garland told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Monday. He added that the current investigation into the riot—which has led around 250 people to face criminal charges to date—appeared to be “extremely aggressive and perfectly appropriate.”

Judge Garland, a 1997 Clinton appointee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, received a warm welcome as his confirmation hearing opened. Republicans and Democrats hailed the nominee, who spearheaded domestic terrorism investigations in the 1990s, as qualified both to fight the threat of extremist violence and to steady a Justice Department“I can think of few people better suited” to lead the department, said Sen. Dick Durbin , the Judiciary Committee chairman.

While the investigation into the Jan. 6 attack is expected to largely go on unchanged, Judge Garland, if confirmed, is expected to oversee a dramatic shift in the agency’s approach to a series of other issues, from civil-rights enforcement and police reform to the use of the federal death penalty and the level of discretion prosecutors have in charging crimes.

What about all the pre-election riots across the country?

What will he do about Antifa and their ally BLM? The answered of course is NOTHING.

If there’s a threat now, Biden and the shadow government are doing their best to exacerbate.

Oh yeah, that's my biggest concern too....

Did he really invoke the Holocaust when talking about the capitol riots? Good grief.

Finally a competent man who believes he works for the American people and not the president.

MerrickGarland Humm. How about the billions in property damage in Minneapolis, Seattle, Portland, New York City, etc? Those cities don’t count? biased unqualified unjust SenateJudiciary

Russia hoax II coming up.

The country needs this man to head the Justice Department. IMO, he should then be nominated to be a Justice of the Supreme Court once a vacancy occurs. No ands, ifs or buts.

Will that include looking I to why FBIs warning if violence was ignored by DC and Capitol Police ? Why Capitol Police were not issued riot gear after this warning ? Why 1/3 of Capitol OD force was OFF that day Why requests for NG were ignored by DC Mayor

And silence when BLM-antifa take over the streets this summer

How can anyone view the 1.6.21 insurrection as anything but a direct attack - foreign or domestic- on our democracy? It just goes to show you that GOP’s reflex on anything is to cover up. You can't recoup from coup unless you address the Seditionist in Chief, Donald J. Trump.

They're going to make Trump the story for four years again, aren't they?

You can draw a direct wide-tip black Sharpie line between Trump and Sicknick’s death. Yet GOP Senators want the nation to ‘heal’ and just move on. Trump needs to pay for this. Democracy is accountability and accountability is democracy. Never forget 1.6.21.

I hope that includes antifa and blm

How many GQPers in Congress broke out into a cold sweat when they heard this?
