The Group of Seven countries on Friday agreed stringent environmental controls should govern deep-sea mining and that they would consent to such mining projects only if they did not seriously harm the marine environment.

"We determined that if there is deep-sea mining at all, it should only happen under the most strict environmental standards," Germany's environment minister, Steffi Lemke, told a news conference after a meeting of G7 ministers in Berlin.

The International Seabed Authority , a United Nations body, is drawing up regulations governing seabed mining in the high seas - areas outside any national jurisdiction. Until global rules are in place, sea bed mining is not allowed.

They also said that an ability to demonstrate that the deep-sea environment would not be seriously harmed would be critical for them to consider consenting to any future mining permits in the ISA council. Deep-sea mining involves sucking up potato-sized rocks rich in cobalt, nickel and other battery metals from the Pacific Ocean floor at depths of 4-6 km .

Many scientists and environmentalists have called for a ban on deep-sea mining, saying it could cause lasting damage to little understood habitats. The World Wildlife Fund's call for a moratorium has been joined by companies including carmaker BMW

G7 scrambles to keep climate agenda on track as Ukraine war roils energy suppliesMinisters from the world's wealthiest democracies will wrangle over how to keep climate change goals on track as they meet in Berlin on Thursday for talks overshadowed by spiralling energy costs and fuel supply worries sparked by the war in Ukraine. 'Possessing no actual power, and a strict remit from their respective oligarchies to divert all responsibility to the oligarchies from other countries, it will be a fairly drab, ceremonial, and ineffective gathering.' It's about time the richest countries that have depleted the world's natural resources pay attention not to their pockets but to the environment. They don't have the will nor the power to do anything except having a good time in Berlin and money at taxpayers expense!🌎😱🍀

Metal-lifespan analysis shows scale of wasteMining metals has a rising environmental cost. But high losses and low recycling rates mean that many last only a short time. Well then nature it also begs the question will science society look 2 non metallic solutions, so 4 eg non metallic electrolosis to non metallic electronics, there's alot of milage & untapped potential in a biomass, carbon & cellulose economy, non linear extraction is the future Wasting food, energy, time etc is the norm. Most of us waste their lives in jobs we dislike, relationships which bore us, meaningless friendships, indulgent purchases and so on. We humans are such terribly wasteful creatures. Everything is recyclable to some degree. Metals of any sort should be melted and reused. Why do I bother to separate my trash and recycling if large corporations don't and won't?
