Scores of Aurora police officers and firefighters and representatives from neighboring law enforcement groups joined family and friends for a funeral service at Harvest New Beginnings Church in Oswego Tuesday morning to say goodbye to Aurora Police Officer Brian Shields, who died Jan. 11 due to complications from COVID-19.

Shields, 51, was born in Chicago. He graduated from Proviso East High School with honors before attending the University of Illinois. He was a newspaper reporter for 13 years including with The Beacon-News before becoming a police officer. Shields served with the Aurora Police Department for almost 17 years.

Before Tuesday’s funeral service, a number of Shields’ colleagues and friends spoke about a man they regarded as a friend, a counselor and above all a man of great faith. “It’s a rough day for the Aurora police family,” Carter said. “When people die, a lot of people say what a great person they were. Truer words could not be said about Brian Shields. Brain was a great man – he was a family man, a Christian man, and a loving husband and father and he loved his community and was a great friend. We’re all feeling a loss today.”The Rev. Dan Haas, a chaplain for the Aurora Police Department, also spoke and said he knew Shields for a number of years.
