Perfect for innovative, upper-half dressing.
Business up top and party down below, these are 11 runway-approved outfits ideal for your next video chat.
! You’re at home, who’s to judge? For video calls too, I would say that you should stick to your own sense of personal style—however, the sternum-up frame of most Zooms, FaceTimes, or Houseparties won’t do much to show off your Rick Owens platform boots or sequin Prada skirts.
So for innovative, upper-half dressing, I’ve been looking to the fall 2020 runways for inspiration. Miu Miu does it best, with knit bodysuits with sailor collars and long sleeves that conclude in a leotard bottom. (No one will know that you’re not wearing pants!) At Balenciaga, Demna Gvasalia presciently sent out a T-shirt with an upwards arrow on a model with Zoom green-screen-dyed hair. Prada, Dior, and Dolce & Gabbana all paired shirting and ties on top with completely transparent bottoms, while Gucci put a proper dress over ripped, ragged jeans. Perhaps no look is more video-ready than Matty Bovan’s curtain frocks, however—it’s a smart fix for when that pesky Zoom background won’t work.
1/11At Christian Dior, Maria Grazia Chiuri paired schoolgirlish blazers and neckties with boyish boxer shorts. It’s a look that’s easy—and comfortable—to recreate at home.2/11At Prada, Miuccia Prada brought together all the classic elements of a Prada wardrobe in a twisted way: layers up top and nothing but a sheer skirt over tights on bottom.
3/11Meanwhile at Miu Miu, Mrs. Prada offered the ultimate WFH ensemble: a knit onesie and furry pumps.4/11Balenciaga’s Demna Gvasalia has a penchant for predicting the future. This “eyes up here!” tee and acid green quar-worthy dye job would work great on a video call.
5/11The brothers Caten have long advocated for a leg-lengthening silhouette. At their most recent Dsquared2 show, models sported business layers up top and short shorts below.6/11Even Chanel has a flirty look that can go from Zoom meeting to FaceTime date.
7/11From Dolce & Gabbana, a fusion of suiting and pajamas.8/11Area’s sculptural take on suiting comes with accented shoulders and nothing below.9/11So you have a Zoom happy hour coming up? Take a page from Jonathan Anderson’s playbook and make a dress that resembles your favorite beer can.
10/11Matty Bovan’s curtains-included dress is just the thing to one-up your colleagues during a team meeting.11/11From Vaquera, the only look to really say “business up top” and “black-tie gala below.”
