“2019 will be remembered as the year that women [in entertainment] really made a seismic impact, in terms of executive influence and creative contribution,” says Tom Nunan, a UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television professor. “There seems to be a level of trust that the industry has bestowed upon women, with their judgement in particular, that's wholly embraced in a way that's utterly new.
DuVernay—joining list veterans such as Oprah, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift and fellow newcomers including Rihanna and Reese Witherspoon—is one of the 14 influential women in the media and entertainment industry to make this year’s ranking. Through film, music, philanthropy, fashion and more, these women are affecting groundbreaking change and creating sizable impact beyond their industries.
“One thing that these women realize is that they can use the power of their artistry,” says NYU Stern Professor and former Food Network CEO Erica Gruen. “They don't have to get arrested or lead a political movement. They can just do what they're doing, but do it in a way that gives direct inspiration to people.”
Gruen has noticed particular momentum in the executive suites of Hollywood’s major studios from ViacomCBS Chairwoman Shari Redstone’sof Viacom and CBS to Disney Television Studios and ABC Entertainment Chairwoman Dana Walden’s $71.3 billion purchase of 21st Century Fox. Both have returned to the list.
While UCLA’s Nunan notes that “it's becoming common-place and less and less historic to see women assume roles of real power in the media's most elite executive suites,” the industry still has a long way to go before it achieves 50% representation at the top and across the board. Luckily, these 14 women below—and countless other powerful women in media using their influence to break barriers—are paving the way. 2. Shari Redstone, Chairwoman, ViacomCBS 4.
