The United States should take a more targeted approach with its new pandemic aid so it can save ammunition in case of a future economic slowdown or a second wave of infections, former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan said on Thursday.

Top congressional Democrats and White House officials appeared to harden their stances on the package on Wednesday, as negotiations headed toward an end-of-week deadline with no sign of an agreement. “Relief is better targeted at medium-sized businesses that have difficulty accessing finance and that employ a fair number of people.”Rajan, formerly the chief economist and director of research at the International Monetary Fund, said the Fed seemed in no hurry to raise rates, but he didn’t expect rates to go into negative territory either.

Seems rather equivocal overall. What alternative realistically is there to interim relief, with hope that can make up if/when virus recedes. If people were robots, and could expend great numbers, then perhaps could indulge a harder line view.
