In New Orleans' French Quarter, residents are sad about the closures of restaurants and bars — and the resulting economic pain. But they're also enjoying a respite from lines of backed-up traffic clogging narrow streets and the noise of all-night partyers.

In this Wednesday, May 20, 2020, a bar is boarded-up at a Bourbon Street intersection in New Orleans’ French Quarter. Bars have been closed in New Orleans since early March because of the coronavirus pandemic. Some residents of the historic French Quarter, while acknowledging the economic pain and suffering, say the lack of tourists has been a relief.

The absence of tourists — and the impending reopening of many of the attractions that draw them — have also led French Quarter inhabitants to reflect on the neighborhood’s sometimes precarious balance between the interests of businesses and residents. Some feel that prior to the pandemic, that balance had tilted too far in favor of commerce, putting the quarter’s unique character at risk. The French Quarter is the 300-year-old historic heart of New Orleans.

But she doesn’t appreciate the belligerent drunks who keep her up at night and leave behind garbage — sometimes human waste. Gone — for now — are the “screaming bachelorettes drunkenly singing as they pass by,” he said, and the all-hours “ghost tours:” guides taking advantage of the after-dark atmospherics to lead enthralled visitors through narrow streets as they recount legends of hauntings.

It provides a bittersweet scenario for Chapman, who said he’s made it a point to get out and walk the streets in the evening: Bourbon Street and the parallel Decatur Street, near the French Market and the Mississippi River. Both are lined with bars and restaurants.

Outsiders are the lifeblood of New Orleans, once the largest port city in North America. You can see that the city has lost its way, because historically no one ever talks about pandemics in New Orleans. They don't want to discourage people from traveling there.

'I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be WE

We are days away, if not already past, an economic calamity on New Orleans that will make the economic damage of Katrina pale in comparison
