... [+]: Prosecutors recommended Tuesday that former Trump campaign aide Rick Gates receive no prison time for his role in a money laundering scheme because he provided “extraordinary assistance” to investigators in the Mueller probe despite personal pressure and promises of money to stay quiet.

In a sentencing memo, prosecutors said that Gates met with investigators during former special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe more than 50 times, amounting to what prosecutors called “extraordinary assistance.” They also point out that—in addition to flipping against Trump and his allies to become an important witness for the government—Gates testified publicly in the trials of former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort and adviser Roger Stone. Both have been convicted.

Prosecutors say that despite pressure and promises of “monetary assistance” to keep quiet, Gates continued to cooperate with the government.: Gates was indicted in 2017 for helping Manafort conceal income and dodge taxes from lobbying work both had done on behalf of the Ukrainian government. Gates plead guilty in February 2018.: Gates and five other Trump associates have been convicted in the fallout from Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference during the 2016 election.
