An art-auction app aims to harness the theatrics of live events and the discretion of private sales

A former Christie’s rainmaker who left the art world two years ago after masterminding some of the industry’s biggest sales—including a $450 million Leonardo da Vinci—has reemerged with a virtual auction platform of his own.

On June 20, Loïc Gouzer launched Fair Warning, a members-only app that will auction a single work of art roughly every week beginning June 28. The swipe-to-bid sales will be conducted at 5 p.m. ET for several hundred collectors and art advisers he will invite to join or allow to apply, Mr. Gouzer said.

Many auction houses already use apps like liveauctioneers that operate seamlessly.

If this is breaking new ground then the art world must be a few steps behind other auction categories.

Now, as the 100th anniversary of the rampage approaches, the city is finally reckoning with its history of racial violence.
