Even Stephen Colbert isn't exempt from the healing powers of Steve from Blue’s Clues.

“Folks, that soft sound you’ve been hearing everywhere this week is the internet weeping because Steve, the original host of the children’s show, dropped a video message to millennials,” Colbert began. He then absolved himself of any deep connection to the series. “Now, I was grown up in the late ’90s. Although I was aware of the show because of my kids, those kids are all grown up and moved away now,” Colbert explained. “So obviously, I have no emotional investment in Steve.

Burns then commended his viewers for the progress they’ve made over the ensuing decades. “Look at all you have done, and all you have accomplished in all that time. And it’s just, it’s just so amazing, right?” Burns continued.“We started out with clues and now it’s what? Student loans, and jobs, and families. And some of it has been kind of hard, you know?” Burns concluded. “I guess I just wanted to say that after all these years, I never forgot you, ever.

Colbert struggled to keep his composure when assessing the video. “Um, you know, nice message and everything, but the show is for my kids and I am a man and—by definition—I feel nothing,” he said, prompting an unexpected visitor. “Are you sure about that, Stephen?” Burns himself asked, walking onstage to applause.

“I just came by. I wanted to see if you were okay,” Burns continued. “You seemed kind of upset, and I just wanted to know if maybe you wanted a hug? I mean, that’s what friends do, right?” Colbert then shrugged. “I mean ifThe duo exited the stage after Colbert found—surprise—a blue-hued clue behind his desk. “Wow! Great job, Stephen. Let’s go tell Blue!” Burns said, recreating his signature one-liner with ease. What’s that? Oh, there’s just something in my eye.
