) said on Thursday it planned to restart production at some plants in North America as early as April 6, bringing back its most profitable vehicles at a time when U.S. demand has slumped and the No. 2 U.S. automaker is conserving cash to survive the coronavirus pandemic.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based company said it was bringing key plants back online, while introducing additional safety measures to protect returning workers from the coronavirus pandemic. "We will continue to assess public health conditions as well as supplier readiness and will adjust plans if necessary," the company saidThe global coronavirus outbreak, which has killed more than 21,000 people, has forced the shutdown of auto plants around the world as companies attempt to curtail the spread of the disease among factory employees.
