Jim Breyer is the founder and CEO of Breyer Capital and a Forbes 400 member. Breyer shared his review ofby Walter Isaacson for our ongoing series of book reviews by leaders from the worlds of business, academia, entertainment and politics.Last month, I returned to Italy and rediscovered the brilliance of Leonardo da Vinci. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by the Italian Renaissance.

Within the broader arc of Isaacson’s masterpiece lies a profound lesson: Our most pressing problems require multidisciplinary solutions. Leonardo played many roles in his life. At times he was an engineer, at others an artist. He was obsessed with science but was also devoted to Dante. The thing that set him apart from his peers, though, wasn’t his interest in a variety of disciplines, but rather how he pursued all his interests in parallel, so that each would inform the other.

This multidisciplinary approach remains relevant and even essential today. As we think about solving some of the greatest problems facing humanity, we must think like Leonardo. We must approach problems from a multiplicity of perspectives and utilize a diversity of approaches. We must, most significantly, create room for creativity to thrive. If you do so, you will learn about Da Vinci’s paintings, inventions and personal life.
