During attendance at school, when a teacher paused after saying my first name, I’d automatically raise my hand. My last name is Dziewiontkowski. I never had a teacher who could pronounce it. Even after my two older sisters, Laura and Janine, preceded me with the same teachers, my last name was still mangled. It’s pronounced Jiv-in-kowski.
In our neighborhood, to make life easy, our family was known as the Parkers. Everyone knew our real last name, but it was easier to say “Amy Parker.” Dad’s favorite aunt had married a man named Parker. I grew up in the Flushing section of Queens, N.Y., in a middle-class neighborhood. Most of the houses were close to each other and looked the same—stucco clad in aluminum. Ours was a bit different. My father, John, owned a small business that trucked bricks and cement. Our house was refaced with red brick.
