Texts from conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ phone have been turned over to the committee investigating the January 6 Capitol riot, a source tells CNN

Approximately two years' worth of text messages sent and received by right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones have been turned over to the House select committee investigating the January 6 insurrection, a person familiar with the matter told CNN on Monday.

The messages were handed over to the committee by Mark Bankston, the attorney who represented two Sandy Hook parents who successfully sued Jones in Texas and won nearly $50 million in a civil trial that concluded last week. Bankston would only tell CNN that he is"cooperating with the committee." The select committee declined to comment.During the trial, Bankston revealed that one of Jones' lawyers had"messed up" and inadvertently sent him the two years of text messages.

Will the Alex Jones trials change conspiracy culture? 06:31Jones' attorney Federico Andino Reynal asked the judge in the case to order Bankston to destroy the material and not transmit it to the House committee, but the judge declined.Read More"I'm not standing between you and Congress," Judge Maya Guerra Gamble told Bankston when asked about sending Jones' texts to the committee."That is not my job. I'm not going to do that.

Alex Jones’ $49.3M verdict and the future of misinformationAlex Jones is facing a hefty price tag for his lies about the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre — $49.3 million in damages, and counting, for claiming the nation’s deadliest school shooting was a hoax — a punishing salvo in a fledgling war on harmful misinformation. “I think a lot of people are thinking of this as sort of a blow against fake news, and it’s important to realize that libel law deals with a very particular kind of fake news,” said Eugene Volokh, a First Amendment professor at the UCLA School of Law. U.S. courts have long held that defamatory statements — falsehoods damaging the reputation of a person or a business — aren't protected as free speech, but lies about other subjects, like science, history or the government, are. GOP Rev. Alex Jones has at least 40+years of practice here on many media platforms incl. CBN TBN & der many 24/7 cable cousins What a despicable human being. The parents should be more focused on putting him in prison not seeking this egregious amount of money. They're no better than Jones when it comes to profiting off slain children
