.JacobOller reviews the PBS documentary FeelsGoodMan (premiering tonight), about the fraught life, death, and rebirth of Pepe the Frog:

comic, whose face and expressions were co-opted and corrupted by particularly sinister online communities, with warmth and intelligence.

While there’s a bit of meme explanation for newcomers, those deep into the dark recesses of being Extremely Online won’t feel put off by this extended hand to the rest of the world. Pepe’s simple encapsulations of intense modern and postmodern feelings—everything from red-faced rage to ennui to simple stoner pleasure—belong on a monitor. His face is all big wet eyes and lips, perfect for the expressions of a cartoon toy or an emoji.

The aftershocks of this resonate into the physical world. Furie’s roommate got a tattoo of Pepe saying “Feels good man,” which becomes a visual indicator of pop cultural power dynamics. This testament to his friend’s art may have literally faded, but it’s also seen its fun-loving intent fade into a stigmatic symbol to employers and the rest of the world: “Somebody at Subway thought I was a ‘white power’ dude.

The destructive mundanity of it all, which brakes to an excruciating pace at its more infuriating moments, is a teeth-grinding, jaw-clenching affair that unearths the intimate and deep injustice done to a creator from beneath the vague and broad evil associated with his creation. The biggest stumbling block aside from its pacing is self-reflexive to its topic: sometimes the doc has a hard time getting me to take it seriously.
