The Department of Justice asked for a temporary restraining order to keep Abbott from using state troopers to stop vehicles suspected of transporting migrants. District Judge Kathleen Cardone granted that request on Tuesday.

The case comes amid a resurgence of the coronavirus with the spread of the Delta variant. The Abbott administration has restrained Texas communities from instituting mask or vaccine mandates while focusing his COVID rhetoric on the border region. In May, he issued a disaster declaration because, he said, illegal crossings “posed an ongoing and imminent threat of disaster.”

Immigrant rights activists said Abbott’s latest order directing state troopers to stop any vehicles suspected of transporting migrants — which is now temporarily paralyzed by Tuesday's restraining order — is illegal for a number of reasons, including the fact that it invites racial profiling. Michael Greenberger at the University of Maryland said Texas is a little different than Arizona, since the state is using existing laws.

TPRNews Abbott has chosen to pursue the politics of fear & hatred rather than applying 'values' taught to all of us to humanely treat people who find themselves far away from home fleeing desperate conditions that you or I wouldn't tolerate either. 'There but for the grace of God go I.'

Judge blocks Texas order to limit transporting undocumented immigrantsGov. Greg Abbott's directive would cause 'irreparable injury,' jeopardize noncitizens in federal custody and put agents at risk, the judge said. Good...this is not a dictatorship...yet. Good. It's fucked up that in 2021, Texas is trying to treat undocumented immigrants like sub-human. It's hilarious to me that good ol' freedom loving Texas passed a law that would restrict the travel of ANYONE. Guess it's fine, because they're not white, eh? Lamda variant coming to you soon! Just came in from border. We need an administration that cares about our safety and our lives. They are going to ruin our country.
