An FDA advisory panel on Friday voted against approving third doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for Americans over the age of 16 – but are still considering boosters for older adults.

Sept. 17, 2021 – A FDA advisory panel on Friday voted against approving third doses of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine for younger Americans, but did unanimously agree to recommend boosters for seniors and others at high risk of severe outcomes from the coronavirus. ]

It was also a rebuff to the Biden administration, which announced that boosters would be rolled out to the general public beginning Monday, before the FDA had cleared them. The FDA Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee’s vote on Pfizer’s original request was split, with 16 members saying there was not enough evidence to support approval of third doses, and two members voting in favor of approval. The FDA is not committed to following the committee’s recommendation, although it often does.

The approved motion specifies support for third doses for people over the age of 65 and anyone who is at high risk because of their occupation—such as health care workers, or because of underlying disease.

FDA panel is first key test for Biden COVID-19 booster planGovernment advisers are debating whether to recommend extra doses of the Pfizer vaccine, a key step toward the Biden administration's plan to dispense COVID-19 booster shots. Scientists have been divided over the need for boosters and who should get them. The Delta variant was from December, 2020. This should be a no-brainer right now. Think more as clinicians and practitioners than researchers. Science is now a debate and not based off evidence or facts. Let that sink in.
