They probably thought the auto pilot was on, but in fact, it was just the cruise control & that's why the car didn't react to the road. It was probably operating on the minimal safety features, e.g, lane departure assist, adaptive cruise....so wouldn't be fully self driving
Tesla cars are not driverless. If someone tries to overcome interlocks to operate the car without someone in the driver’s seat it is their fault. Same thing with any car, if some one puts a brick on the accelerator, then one expects an accident.

Most likely the driver changed seat because he could not get the door open after the crash. Could also have been a third person driving that left the scene after the crash.

Even the MercedesBenz ECO start/stop auto-shut-off feature is an accident waiting to happen. I can’t count the number of times the feature has caused the vehicle to stall while pulling out into oncoming traffic, departing from an elevated parking lot, & more. Dangerous feature.
