'I like to be introduced as a designer, not an African American designer. It doesn't mean that I'm ashamed of who I am. It's just that, when it comes down to my profession, why is skin color introduced first?' LaQuan Smith asks. - NBCBLK
'I like to be introduced as a designer, not an African American designer'
That's when he was offered an internship at BlackBook, the art and culture magazine, working for then-fashion director Elizabeth Sulcer. She was in demand for industry parties and events, and Smith made use of those contacts, showing up uninvited at times dressed in his own designs. He took to handing out his leggings to whoever would take them. In 2010, the effort paid off when he spotted Lady Gaga in a pair as he flipped through a tabloid while with his mom at a supermarket.
"I was 21 years old and I had such an incredible amount of support from industry insiders, and then a couple years after that it sort of was like a crash and burn, where reality started to hit me," Smith said."I had no business infrastructure, I had no money. It was just popularity. ... It took time for me to be able to focus on, really hone in on, running a solid business."
"I always tend to feel, I don't know, maybe pigeonholed sometimes," Smith said."I like to be introduced as a designer, not an African American designer. It doesn't mean that I'm ashamed of who I am. It's just that, when it comes down to my profession, why is skin color introduced first?"Read more: NBC News
NBCBLK 支持 NBCBLK I really agree with you. Why does it have to be African, Black, Hispanic designer or whatever? We never hear 'white' designer. It is racism, yet the press commit it every time with impunity. And they call realDonaldTrump a racist. NBCBLK hahahahaha introduced first in some places if your black youre probably lucky to have a job
NBCBLK Amen. The word minority needs to be removed from languages. We all one creation. There no such thing as racist term NBCBLK I agree NBCBLK Totally agree with you Mr. Smith! You are a fabulous designer! Why the need to mention your skin color? What does that have to do with anything? I never heard they say and now the White Fashion Designer.... And fill in anyone’s name! Wake up people!
NBCBLK Because like it or not, that's what people care about. Mostly thanks to the ideological priorities of the leftist identity movement that seems to have hijacked the priorities of all news and entertainment. NBCBLK Agreed we don't say white American or British designer, good on you. I know exactly what you mean. 😊
NBCBLK Agreed. If you choose to go by African-American/Black designer it’s no issue. But stop acting like that’s a requirement. Labeling race in fashion is annoying. Virgil Abloh is in demand but he don’t go around constantly parading his race at LV. NBCBLK Well said. Identity politics is a burden to civil society.
NBCBLK black privilege

NBCBLK agreed 💯 NBCBLK Great point & he’s sporting an awesome outfit!!! NBCBLK I was brought up to judge people by their actions not their skin color. I agree with you. What b wrong with Mr.LaQuan Smith our designer of the evening? NBCBLK idk, maybe because every color has its own complimentary color/colors? using corel paint shop pro, or even photoshop would explain it better, some colors or gradients look good for one color while not so much with another color, but each color is beautiful,
NBCBLK NBCBLK You are right, your assessment is correct NBCBLK Because it matters to the liberal media that sees color before everything else NBCBLK You’re right...You’re an American designer & WHY do they have to throw race into everything..& they don’t say White or Caucasian designer do they..!...Same like couple American film directors...It may be just director for Scorsese but for Lee it’s black or African American..!!
NBCBLK Respect. Exactly right NBCBLK I like the look of your coat. Both sides match each other close enough.
