Their plight mirrors strains — and possible solutions — across the West.

Campaign posters for Carsten Sieling of the center-left Social Democrats and Carsten Meyer-Heder of the center-right Christian Democrats Union compete in Bremen.

And as with Democrats in the United States — as well as like-minded parties throughout Europe — much of the momentum is coming from the left. Even without going as far as Kühnert would like, leaders of the Social Democrats have signaled they are prepared to turn left. The party recently disavowed welfare cuts implemented during the SPD’s last run atop the federal government, an era when the party saw capturing the center as the surest path to power.

The overall picture for both the center-left and center-right in Europe is one of decline. In this month’s elections for the European Parliament, both factions are on pace for big losses, with each camp likely to shed about 20 percent of its seats as the continent’s politics continue to fragment. That reality has brought the party to the brink of an astonishing result: In state elections here Sunday, which coincide with the European vote, polls show the SPD may lose to the CDU for the first time in Germany’s post-World War II history.

Schmugler, a 24-year-old law student, said the party needs to compromise less and fight for its ideals more or it risks trending toward irrelevance.

You mean that after years of embracing austerity policies that alienated their electoral base, the center left has finally learned their lesson? Took long enough.

They're not moving left. They're taking off the mask. That's the same thing AOC represents here. This is the future and it's going to be ugly as leftists show us all who they really are. Intolerant and violent, unafraid to unleash state sponsored violence against undesirables.

''Faced with their own demise, Europe’s social democrats are moving left'' I'll tell you a secret: they were always leftists. Social Democrats are, as a rule, leftists. Like Hitler, for example.
