(Brent Stirton/Getty Images) Do you remember where you were on Jan. To understand hallucinations, we first have to take a look at how vision works. 6, 2021? I was attending a virtual memorial service — mourning one of the hundreds of thousands lost in the pandemic — when I heard an anxious cry from an adjacent room where the television was blaring. “That’s what has been missing in the city.

For those of us, like me, who immigrated to the U. From Eye to Brain In its simplest terms, vision is essentially a collaboration between the eyes and the brain. Katy Bock, military training director, Recruit Training Command, according to the Navy release.S. after surviving war, violent coups and state-sponsored political violence, the insurgency was a vicious reminder that no place is immune from authoritarianism, even the oldest and most developed democracy of them all. Eventually, these signals end up in the cortex, which is where most of our conscious visual processing takes place, explains Cristopher Niell, a neuroscientist at the University of Oregon’s Institute of Neuroscience. That it could happen here was not a surprise. Jennifer Couture said, per AP. Donald Trump’s Big Lie about the 2020 election was cosmically aligned with the carefully orchestrated white supremacist narrative of “The Great Replacement” coursing through right-wing media — that Black and brown Americans are diminishing the power of white Americans. But when you look out at the world, you don’t see a pixelated image.” No politician in history, though, has managed to swagger through an entire term in office.

Layer this on the prevailing notion of American exceptionalism — a fortified and virtuous “shining city on a hill” unique from the rest of the world — makes tragedies like Jan. 6 not only possible, but probable in a new era of politically fueled violence. How does the brain get from a pattern of light on the retina to the real, 3D world that we navigate? Your brain, Niell says, “does a series of almost mathematical operations on the image to pull out different features that are important for figuring out what’s there — edges, colors, texture, and so on.. In the absence of a real awakening and an urgent collective action against authoritarianism, we are doomed. It is time to swap American exceptionalism for American humility . But there’s something else going on, too.. “We believe very strongly that those types of behaviors are directly impacting our fighting readiness and the performance of our sailors,” she added.” The question for Adams is: What comes after swagger? What, when he gets up with the men in the morning, is he going to do? One of the knocks on Bill de Blasio, the outgoing mayor, was that he let his attention drift after an early spate of accomplishments.

. The brain matches these “pixels” to a pattern it expects to see. New research by the University of Chicago Project on Security and Threats on the Jan. 6 attack highlighted a few key insights about the insurrectionists: 1) Fewer than 20% of the 193 people arrested had an affiliation with a known militant organization such as the Proud Boys, despite vast media coverage of such groups; 2) Insurrectionists were older, about 40 on average, suggesting that these were mature adults who likely faced personal and economic consequences; 3) Researchers found a strong correlation between those who participated in the insurrection and those who live in counties where there is a decrease in the white population. Photons reveal only a dark area against the background of the table. Barton Gellman of The Atlantic summarized that last finding: “For every point-drop in a county’s percentage of non-Hispanic whites from 2015 to 2019, the likelihood of an insurgent hailing from the county increased by 25%. This was a strong link and held up in every state. So the brain interprets the dark area as the shadow of your hand. “We have lived through two years of continuous crises,” he said in his first speech as Mayor, which he delivered digitally on New Year’s Day, after plans for an in-person inauguration were scrapped.

” The research findings illuminate how authoritarianism and political extremism, laced with white supremacy, has infiltrated mainstream America. Extremism is the new normal. Or to put it another way, when you look down at the table, you immediately “see” a shadow there. “ Democracy Under Siege ,” a 2020 report by the nonprofit Freedom House, found that nearly 75% of the world’s population live in a country that faces democratic decline. The U. But what’s happening when we see things that aren’t out there? According to Niell, some hallucinations are similar to what happens in an optical illusion.S. Somewhere between seventy-five and eighty per cent of hospital beds in the city are currently occupied, a number that officials expect to increase before Omicron subsides.

is among the 25 countries that have experienced massive deterioration in freedom fueled by a range of dimensions, including political corruption and lack of government transparency. Our eyes see a pattern, but our brain fills in the details that tell us what it is, based on what it expects to see. Next to the climate crisis, the biggest existential threat humanity faces is the rise of nationalist authoritarianism, diminishing the dignity, civil rights and agency of people across the globe. While the defeat of Donald Trump provided a temporary sigh of relief in the U. How tightly we hold onto those expectations and beliefs about our experiences are important, too.S., the sense of American exceptionalism continues to plague our domestic psyche. In the study, the researchers saw that people without mental illness were more likely to update their beliefs and expectations about reality (and therefore what they experienced) when presented with new evidence. Twenty-seven million dollars came from Goldman Sachs, which agreed to offer the amount in loans to the city’s so-called safety-net hospitals, which serve the poorest New Yorkers.

Protecting and defending democracy lags behind other priorities, including the Biden administration’s, which has shied away from leveraging political capital for voting rights. The most recent effort to bring together global leaders failed to create an effective agenda that bridges domestic and international voices and strategies to fight authoritarianism. Niell and his colleagues at Oregon gave mice a drug that induces hallucinations. Meanwhile, from Brazil to Hungary to India, the global authoritarian bloc is building a formidable coalition to fuel and sustain the power of its strong men. Just this week, Trump endorsed the right-wing . But that’s not what happened.
