The Long Barracks are the oldest still-standing structure in San AntonioBuilt around 1724, the Long Barracks at the Alamo is the oldest building still standing in Texas, as well as San Antonio, with the rest of the Alamo built about 20 years later. Besides the Long Barracks, Mission San Juan Capistrano, just south of San Antonio, was built in 1731.The Medical Arts building, now called the Emily Morgan Hotel, as seen in 1928.

In July of 2015, the San Antonio Missions, including the Alamo, were designated a World Heritage Site. The designation also comes with legal protection from an international convention administered by UNESCO. The Missions are the only landmarks in Texas to have earned the designation.

Tall buildings are not inherently good or bad; instead, as McGlone wrote, it's what they symbolize that's more meaningful. We need a strong, diverse economy with major corporations to create the need for tall buildings," McGlone wrote. San Antonio, despite its population, is a relatively low-income city. In 2018, the median income for low-income households was a little over $49,000, the second-lowest of all six major Texas cities , according to the U.S. Census.

There is a general lack of tall apartment buildings in the downtown San Antonio area. While a good chunk of San Antonio's high rises are devoted to hotels, very few are currently functioning as more permanent living. "The typical big-time developers always said no one would live downtown," McGlone wrote, citing a lack of grocery stores."They thought everyone was a family with two kids and a dog.
