Photo: Barry Gossage/NBAE via Getty Images As tensions between the U.S. and Russia continue to rise amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, American WNBA star and two-time Olympic gold medalist Brittney Griner has been arrested in Russia. Griner, who plays for the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA and for Russia’s UMMC Ekaterinburg during the off-season, was reportedly arrested on drug charges in February after customs found vape cartridges in her luggage at the airport.
When Griner was taken into custody remains unclear. According to ESPN, sports agents have been urging American players to leave Russia for at least a week. Women’s basketball agent Mike Cound confirmed to ESPN on February 27 that he was working with at least “two players” in Russia trying to coordinate flights out of the country, and all we know about the airport footage released is that it was filmed sometime in February.
