After House impeachment, a Senate trial looms for the soon-to-be-private-citizen Trump. His allies cry foul.

Trump’s historic second impeachment now moves on to the Senate for trial, but outgoing Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has indicated the chamber will not take up the matter before the president leaves office. Republicans have seized on the timetable to argue that Trump should not be tried in the Senate as a private citizen.Rep.

Raskin said he did not know when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi would deliver the single article of impeachment to the Senate, which will revert to Democratic control on Wednesday, but said it “should be coming up soon.”Sen. Lindsey Graham, who is reprising his role as an ardent Trump defender after breaking with him over the Capitol siege, said it would be “insane at every level” to press ahead with a Senate trial after the president’s term had ended.

That drew a sarcastic retort from Rep. Adam Schiff . “Now Graham calls for unity. I agree,” Schiff tweeted. “Let’s unite in removing Trump from office and disqualify him from [ever] holding a public trust again.”If Trump is convicted by the Senate, which would require a two-thirds majority, the chamber could vote separately, by simple majority, to ban him from running for president in 2024, or from seeking any other office.

Sen. Dick Durbin, the incoming chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on CNN there would be consequences for any member of Congress “who was complicit in either planning or executing that insurrection,” as some have been accused of doing. The Illinois Democrat said the matter should be taken up by the chamber’s Ethics Committee. Some Republicans who were critical of Trump’s conduct nonetheless voted against impeaching him, including Rep. Nancy Mace .

A private citizen cannot legally be impeached. Grandstanding idiots.

maggieNYT No. Trump's axis of evil cries foul.

People agree

It’s not over yet. Him leaving office means little

The real crime is the Democrat coup in stealing the election.

Nothing says unify and heal like continuing the divisive ways of the Dems.

Yes please bring Trump into the Biden chapter and wreck his “America United” theme

maggieNYT Demands Senate trial. Demands arrest on federal charges. Demands imprisonment. Period.

Impeachment is absolutely crucial for Congress to assert its supremacy over the executive branch—regardless of who leads it. The precedent will long outlive this political moment, and could lead to even worse executive crimes unless Trump’s impeachment deters them.

And the blm riots don’t ?

maggieNYT REMOVE TRUMP NOW! Hitler led 3000 storm troopers in a march on Munich. Fatal shots rang out. Hitler fled. Convicted of treason, he wrote “Mein Kampf” in prison. Paroled, he launched a comeback. . . . “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it' (Santayana).

maggieNYT Exactly right

👍🇺🇸🏛🕵️‍♀️

maggieNYT A Senate trial has to go forward. No pardon for Trump or unity cannot be achieved. Violent protests by his supporters must be stopped by appropriate force until all seditious elements must be eradicated to prevent a violent civil war. No exceptions for Congressional members.

Dems need to stop wasting time with an impeachment that GOP won't support, and just turn to 14th Amendment, Section 3.

maggieNYT Trump needs to be convicted in a Senate trial, if only to show that no president can incite violence with impunity. Adddd bonus: a convicted Trump can't ever hold public office again.

maggieNYT He needs to be held accountable to 80 + million Americans!

Yea!!! It will happen!

Since when does leaving an office undo crimes? Of course this and all the other trials to come are absolutely necessary. It's about accountability.

Why are the socialist Dems still so scared of DT? Only 3 days and still desperate to impeach a man that wont be impeachable after he leaves the WH?

Of course it demands a trial, or in future, any president who is within 2 weeks of the end of their presidency can attempt a coup without fear of impeachment and prosecution. A ridiculous position.

maggieNYT a clear and present danger
