Leave a chair empty at the family Christmas dinner or face the possibility of having that chair empty forever. That's the stark dilemma Belgium's prime minister has set as Europe struggles to reconcile cold medical advice with festive traditions.

FILE - In this Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020 file photo, women wearing face masks walk past a Christmas tree and lights in Burlington Arcade, where all non-essential shops are temporarily closed during England's second coronavirus lockdown, in London.

Yet the desire for contact with family is such that all the horrible realities can be briefly sidelined. In France, it took a letter addressed to Santa Claus to put it in perspective. People are currently barred from visiting other households in much of the U.K and there are travel limits to high-infection areas.

But even in her native Germany, led by the ultra-careful Angela Merkel, social considerations will prevail: A current restriction that limits private gatherings to five people from up to two households, not including children, will be allowed to double to 10 people over Christmas.

What do Trumpists think when they see stories like these... ...that Belgium’s PM — along with every decent, caring person in the world — is in on the conspiracy to make Trump look bad and destroy his economy? Half of America has been reality-challenged for the last 4 years.

Maybe if people took the precautions seriously this dilemma would not exist in the first place...🤔
