The European Union drug regulator said that “unusual blood clots” should be listed as a “very rare” side effect of the AstraZeneca AZN, -0.18% AZN, -0.27% COVID-19 vaccine, but insisted the benefits of the shot outweigh the risks.
The MHRA said the evidence of a link between the AstraZeneca vaccine and unusual blood clots is “stronger but more work is still needed,” while the European Medicines Agency said it had found a “possible link.” The EMA said one plausible explanation for the combination of blood clots and low blood platelets is an immune response, leading to a condition similar to one seen sometimes in patients treated with heparin .
AstraZeneca said on March 14 that its own review of safety data of more than 17 million people vaccinated in the U.K. and EU had shown no evidence of an increased risk of blood clots.
