"You only get one chance to change the world. And, it's my responsibility at least, on this one, to see if I can influence the world for the better," he says.Peter Cappelli, a professor of management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, says that's because the concept runs counter to American notions of work and capitalism. Unions are less powerful, and workers have less political sway than in other countries, he says.
"We had shipped more features than we had in recent years, we felt more productive, the quality of our work increased. So then we just kept going with it," Nagele says. Personally, she says, it gives her time to rest her brain, which helps solve complex problems:"You can ask my team, there's multiple times where somebody is like, 'On Sunday morning, I woke up and ... I figured it out.
k3nnr This all about not providing benefits ?
Uh huh
Wouldn’t know what to do with the time!
People aren't tired and have better free/rec time
WHO WOULDVE THOUGHTTTTT
How about companies offer full time employment with wages that reflect cost of living for their employees
This is just getting a raise by cutting or capping your hours. This is great for unambitious people
Well yah of course when you get more money for less hours you're gonna be happier.
Reduced work hours is one of the three pillars on which we can build a future where we can have full, flexible and fulfilling employment using augmentation and automation of everything. Check out our recent position paper on futureofwork BellLabs:
how many is 'many'?
❤
It is really new idea: part time!
Bullshit.
Let’s make it a 24 hour work week.
1/2 counselors or just take a specific legal code to get an idea about his rights, i.e. if there was a specific code about Impeachment or main limits of a public server, the cover-up couldn't be happen, but looks like convenient to the government but people.
Was Bernie already elected?
1/1 The truth is that there is a very complex, disordered and unspecific variation of laws in the legal system in which goberment and richest as rich companies and employers take advantage over the workers and most current citizens that couldn't pay a legal c
Yay!
Most people need 40 hours and the overtime
“Many employers aren't just moving to 10-hour shifts, four days a week, as companies like Shake Shack are doing; they're going to a 32-hour week — without cutting pay. “
Too many services - dtrs, dentists, car services, banks, etc. - still do not offer evening or weekend hours. It is still challenging to take care of life’s chores on a M-F 8-5 schedule.
False and misleading article. Define 'many' as more accurately just a 'few'.
4-10s. Easy solution.
When they created weekends instead of a six day work week with no overtime pay, they realized rested employees were more productive. They also realized that free time and more income created a vacation industry. Family leave will create a need for family products and industries.
Keep playing
Yas! No one should work 5 days a week. It’s too much
But have the employers cut paying health care benefits? That’s why i am supporting Bernie and Elizabeth.🇺🇸🇺🇸
Time to lean? ya got time to clean!
People seem to think this means 4 8 hour days. It means 4 10 hour days. Because of daycare and other obligations, that is not doable for a lot of people. As someone who commutes an hour a day, I vote NO. I'd work 6 hours for 6 days if I could.
bs. this is npr bowing. kissing the ring of their sugar daddy who's mad, and mad at them.
Working 40 hours in 4 days not the same as a 32 hour workweek. And the examples given at shake shack wouldn’t work for hourly employees here...you can’t just have them work 32 hours and pay them for 40...they would lose benefits. So labor laws would need to change
I am trying this experiment next month!
As paid by the hour employees. Does overtime pay start after 32hrs or after 40?
Oh plz poor babies can’t work 40hrs lmfao let’s cater to them more why don’t we 🤬 I work in construction, where the real men/women are. We average 55hrs a week. Sometimes we don70hrs. Everyone is happy, productive, and efficient. No discipline these days, work them hard
Thank you Trump! Higher wages make this possible!
I would LOVE a 32 hour work week. I try to save energy to get things done at home and it just isn't there at the end of my shift. Most things get pushed to the weekend. Even if I got a single extra day a month, that would make such a difference in my life.
The article says that shakeshack has been testing this with the work weeks of their *managers*. Making the article’s associated image a picture of a front line employee, who isn’t eligible for this test schedule, is very deceptive. Very poor journalism. Do better, NPR.
First four words: 'Companies around the world...' I've never seen in the US a company cutting hours without cutting pay. I think you are living in a fantasy world.
More time working at their 2nd and 3rd jobs?
In summary, many employers (but mostly not US employers) are doing it. Most workers keep their pay which is great for salary workers but not hourly. If hourly wants a similar 32hr/4day benefit the offer is 40hr/4 days
You wish.
Any employee working 30 hrs a week is guaranteed “full time” health insurance benefits thanks to .BarackObama and the Affordable Care Act. This safeguards employees from unethical practices of employers trying to deny healthcare benefits by not offering full time hours.
Ugh I hope this trend hits education. Shout out to all the teachers about to go into the winter-spring period of no breaks.
The nuclear industry in the US has been on a 4x10 schedule for decades.
I'm off every other Friday and love it. The only way I will ever give it up is to get every Friday off.
No thats how you end up with people having to work two jobs just to pay rent. I know because my husbands last job pulled that crap. No increase in pay, just decrease in hours and because there hours didn't meet required hours worked for insurance it wasn't offered to him.
Without cutting pay. Really? No loss of benefits? Somehow you seemed to forget about your reader’s obvious 1 inquiry. Did anyone lose benefits? Since you didn’t mention that, it is obvious that this is poor journalism or you’re hiding part of the story.
Maybe it's the $200-$600 per month per employee that they save not giving their employees health insurance
What is the cost of living in the areas that they are moving to a 32-hour workweek? Are these minimum wage jobs requiring only a high school education (that may be automated in the future)? What age group/population segment is this targeting?
If Bernie wins I hope to work zero hours and have all of my basic needs paid for by the Democrat millennials who voted for him.
This really needs to move to industrial work as well. Retail and service need the extra day off but workers throughout could really use a 4 day week.
And all under President Trump's economy! 🇺🇲 KAG2020
Thank you President Trump POTUS for creating the economic environment for American workers! Media will never give you the credit that you deserve, but all honest non-TDS-enraged Americans readily agree! AmericaFirst TrumpEffect TrumpEconomy
THIS was what higher productivity was supposed to give us—Instead all the profit has been hijacked by top management and shareholders, and the workers creating the value are mostly working the same or even longer hours. DemocraticSocialism UBI ToxicCapitalism zombieEconomics
Friday is national fuckoff day at most work places anyhow. Would be interested to see how it helps retail workers who typically aren't on m-f schedules.
Sucks for us who work on hourly pay
Doesn’t really help if you are hourly though...
Duh
I believe research has shown such benefits for several years now, hasn't it?
they’ll be giving chapter 11 bankruptcy a try
National Puppet radio at it again those employers don't have to offer benefits to ' part time employees'
I'll take shit that ain't gonna work in retail, food service, hospitality or medical for $500
Wow, “common sense” is making moves in 2020.
I don’t see that lasting much longer than the election year.
They’ve been doing that in Sweden for the last 6 years. Same pay, but 32 hour work week. Productivity still is far above what it was beforehand.
suuuuuure they are. not here.
Open office plans and meetings hinder productivity, according to this report.
My coworkers and I have the option of the 4 day work week. I chose 5. Because of them enjoying their Fridays iff, I'm the person stuck handling all the emergencies that come up bc everyone is f'n off.
Good
Don't hold your breath America.
Except America. Everything that would actually improve the lives of Americans is killed by corporations, GOP, and the NRA.
Dude I’m not meant to work 5 days a week. 4 is about all I can handle. Seriously. I need this.
Love it but I'd rather have a day off mid-week instead of a three day weekend.
When I worked 4 10-hour days, I had more time for home & life, including earning my master's degree.
speaking as someone working 4 10's here in the states, I can confirm having a 3 day weekend gives me a hell of a lot more time to have a life.
...and in some scenarios, a 4-day workweek can cut commuting, reducing traffic and most importantly, reducing greenhouse gas production. Telecommuting where possible should also become the norm, not the exception.
ClaraJeffery More time to work that second job.
Healthcare workers like myself..would still see 5 work days with 40 + hours. Which makes me happy..because I have been doing this for years...just like the generations before me.
Americans really need to stop listening to the people who profit off their work as to what constitutes a productive work week. Almost everyone could benefit from a 4-day work week - even the greedy business owners (& stockholders).
It’s about time.
Yawn....been doing these studies for years
4 8-hour days (for the same salary as 40 hours) would add more jobs to the economy. More people working, more money spent. CEOs make WAYYYYY more than enough $$$, let them take a haircut to boost the economy.
New Zealand: economic powerhouse of wine and lamb
When I worked 4 10-hour days, I had more time for home & life, including earnings a master's degree.
Where! I’d like to know?
DrFNA 'research' discussion
Using that logic, a 1-day work week should send profits soaring!
Let me know when it's down to a day.
